Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind

Happy birthday, David and your book was not at the B&N I visited today.

I'm so disappointed with my local bookstores. I went to two different Barnes and Nobles, two different Borders, and a Books-a-Million looking for both Reap the Whirlwind and Twist of Faith, and no one had either in stock.

So I got home and said to hell with them and ordered both from Amazon. I love my local bookstores, but it seems that the northern VA area is real slow to get the new titles.

You don't need to go trudging down to your local Borders to see if they have the new books. The Borders website has the ability to check the stock. All I did was check the stock of some local shops, placed an online order to be picked up, got the email the next day saying they had it waiting and went and got it. I do wish B&N did that. All I can do with B&N is see if the website says the book is available for purchase and then call the local shops to find if they have it.

I do that all the time, and 9 out of 10 tries, the Borders Stores information is dead wrong compared to actual stock in the stores. I know the disclaimer states there's a 24-48 hour differential in stock levels and reporting, but I've found it to be extremely inconsistent.

It's a good idea, but in my experience, it fails in the practice. It'd be great to have instant access to a given store's on-hand inventory in real-time, but I don't know if we'll ever get that sort of a feature (or indeed, if Borders would even want to provide such a feature--they want people in the stores, after all).

But I;ve found that when the online inventory says they have it and I place the order, then if I do get the email saying they have it waiting for me, they do. That bit of the process really does work. And I do use it instead of traipsing all over town to try to find it.

Jeremy,

Thanks for the birthday wishes. To answer your questions, the Romulans do not play a direct role in Reap the Whirlwind. The inspiration for the title was a post by a TrekBBS poster whose handle is Ratboy, and its source is the Old Testament, Hosea 8:7. It is intended to speak to people being made to face the consequences of their actions.

I knew it was Old Testament, just didn't know from where. These sorts of sayings have a funny way of trickling down into common usage while the source gets lost along the way.

The Romulans were featured in the last chapter ( I think) of STT. Wouldn't something happen with that arc in Reap the Whirlwind?
The Romulans were featured throughout Summon the Thunder, actually. However, the story that I wanted to tell in Reap the Whirlwind did not require their inclusion. Because Vanguard is a continuing series, I did not feel that it was necessary to address every unresolved story element in this book. I've left the Romulan elements for future tomes, either by Messrs. Ward and Dilmore, or by myself, or by a player to be named later.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^So does that mean that there may be people other than you and Ward/Dilmore writing Vanguard?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I don't know. Right now, it's just us monkeys. But because I am not capable of seeing the future, I cannot say whether it will always be that way.

I have heard rumors that a different author might be kind-sorta playing with some Vanguard-related toys one of these days, but it's too soon (and not my place) to divulge details, so I won't.

Patience, folks. Patience. :)

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

i'd like to see KRAD or CLB tackle Vanguard.

i'd also like to see KRAD, Wardilmore and Mack tackle TTN at some point...

Got my copy today. Can't wait to read it.

Side Note: Will Distant Early Thunder be available in book form anytime soon? Seeing as how it's a prequel of sorts to vanguard, I'd be interested in reading it.

Distant Early Warning.

Granted, Distant Early Thunder actually would be a cool title for a book - Trek or otherwise! :D

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind now on sale from Amazon

I checked Barnes & Noble over the weekend, but they did not have it yet. I'm planning on taking another look later on in the week.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind now on sale from Amazon

Boought my copy on Saturday. Good read so far. Got a kick out two "special guest stars". Funny stuff. Hope they make it through.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind now on sale from Amazon

Ordered mine yesterday from Amazon, and it is on its way.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind now on sale from Amazon

I got it at my local Borders about an hour ago. I was just reading the first two till I got ahold of RtW and now I got it I'll go ahead and start it.

The absolute soonest we're likely to see Distant Early Warning in print form is in 2009.

Well, one could simply purchase the ebook and print it out. Then you'd have a nice, printed copy of Distant Early Warning.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ Ebooks are print-restricted. You can't print them out ... at least, not without some effort.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^^ In addition, the "nice" part is debatable. :vulcan:

Now, I'm just trying to figure out how Australia has Whirlwind, but Kansas doesn't.

You have to take into account the extra time required to add disclaimer stickers to the front of the books stating that the Shedai are just a hypothesis and that there is no consensus on the origins of the meta-genome.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
