Vance's Schematics

Just a question, which may sound stupid:

Why no grid lines on the Ptolemy or Saladin 2245s?

well, paint me science blue and call me a fanboy, but i like the pittsburgh class. its got chutzpah.

That was just the request, probably to make it more distinct from the TOS regular version. For an 'in universe' explanation, maybe the shield grid was ALSO upgraded when the ships changed over from heavy laser cannons?

Real fit of originality here, I know. This is just the 'cage' version of the Hermes class, which is the same as the Saladin class only without most of the weapon mounts.

Heh, not really a coincidence, I suppose.. but now you've got a schematic to go along with that ship. :)

This is a test of the TMP parts I've finally wrapped up. Comments more than welcome!

Did you mean to have only a forward phaser on the dorsal? If so, why?

Why all the ports on the torpedo bay?

Nice work!

The Hermes is a scout class, so I only gave it the one primary phaser bank. Also, that's not a 'torpedo' pod, but an observation deck in its place, similar to the large natural scienecs section on the 1701-A.

Ah, right. I was wondering about the windowed look. I assumed this was a destroyer like the Saladin.

Not yet. The DD (Saladin type) will come after I get some feedback on this puppy. This is a whole new part set, and a difficult one, so I wanted to get feedback on the 'lightest' of ships that makes use of it.

Vance :

The set up looks great as it is. Can't wait to see more of your work on the other ships/refits. I especially like the shading you added to parts that are painted a differently color. It really makes the model stand out (I hate the term "pops" it is getting overused, but that is also a good description for the shadded areas). Specifically, I am talking about the shaded areas around the forward end of the nacelle, the stripe around the bridge section and the vertical stripe down the nacelle strut.

My only question has to do with the shape forward of the impulse drive chamber. For lack of a better work it appears to be the shape of a Ferengi vessel. Is that soemthing that appears on all of the refit vessels of this era (I don't recall having seen it before, but that doesn't mean anything), or is it specific to the scout class vessel? Not a complaint against the design, by any means, because I love the work. Just a question as to that area's purpose.

Keep up the good work Like I said above, I look forward to more in the future.

Regardless

That marking acually is there on the TMP and TUC versions of the Enterprise, as bizzarely shaped as it is. It's a ship's marking, actually, and not a physical structure, but I couldn't tell you how it's supposed to be meaningful.

the TMP Hermes looks fantastic! the saucer and nacelle both look good to me.

Vance,

I've never seen that element as a marking. I know that there's a small physical structure in front of the impulse crystal "ring" but I haven't noticed that marking.

Can you provide a ref where we can see it? Mention the scene? I'd like to go hunting... since I'm back from my trip now. ;)

You WOULD ask that (I didn't save the pages I was working from). I did a huge search for Enterprise images to compare to, and was surprised to note differences just about everywhere. (And it didn't help that I used a few different published 'schematics' as reference as well, which were all different).

Anyway, what I saw was that this odd marking was present on all the shots I found (and slightly different on each), but that the small struture that protrudes forward was on SOME shots, but not all. I split the difference, though...

Again, though, if the consensus is that the little structure be put on, I'll happily do it. :)

EDIT: THERE We go - TWOK Screenshots shows the marking (slightly different), but not the protruding housing in front of the impulse deck.

Also, the self-destructing Enterprise in TFSF has the same markings and structure. The TUC Enterprise also has the same set up. I'm guessing it was a change made between TMP (which has the structure and different markings) and the other movies.
