Valiant

It shares many of the same rank structures and traditions with the US Navy, probably because it was something convenient that the writers could look at for a reference. Arguments about inconsistencies are somewhat valid in that regard, but in the end it is simply a creation of writing, which was produced by a large collection of people who didn't have the same knowledge or the same ideas on everything. For me such arguments about inconsistencies with regulations, traditions, or something else the modern military does simply make for interesting factoids to be taken worth a grain of salt as it applies to a fictional organization which exists in a fictional future.

Sorry but I disagree.
Once again, the Millennium Gate makes Trek in no way connected to our universe anymore. So as far as I'm conncerned, Starfleet can and is space Navy.

Oh, well that's a different point. "Space Navy" does stuff that contemporary navies don't, like explore and conduct scientific missions. I don't mind that definition, in fact it's pretty good.

It's people complaining that the writers made mistakes because they don't follow US Navy regulations in their episodes that annoy me, because it's a different organisation that does not use the same rule book.
Yeah, I can see how in certain conversations how that could tap dance on ones nerves. So yeah, I feel ya. ;)

our cable aired st 11 today, i didn't notice the similarities with ds9's valiant before. everything worked out here, the crew of cadets and ensigns safed the galaxy, and was honoured accordingly.
