Vacations as presents

Thanks for posting my opinions for me. Next time, ask before you root around in my brain. :p
I'm really you from the future. I've been trying to keep it a secret.

You couldn't even buy me a fucking winning lottery ticket?!

Damn. I knew being a cheapskate would rebound on me eventually.
BTW, RoJoHen, next time you're in the future would you pick me up a winner, too? Oh, and grab Trip Tucker on your back to 2010.

Back on-topic. Nothing wrong with a trip (particularly an expensive trip) being the main presents for the year. There's also nothing wrong with picking up small souvenirs of a few places the kids really liked that will remind them of this trip--and those can be the "official" presents. Imagine on Christmas Day (well, I'm not Christian, but I'm imagining) that as each kid opens the little presents, the family can relive the vacation.

That's as long as the memories relived are not ones belittling a person, as in, "Remember when Johnny's pants fell down in front of Buckingham Palace?" Parents should not do that nor should they allow siblings to do that.

I don't see what the problem is. Parents who are 'horrified' are clearly members of the 'children can only ever be happy with material things and anyone who doesn't spend like a loon for every minor occasion is a Bad Parent' club.

Alternatively, they might, like me, think that gifts should be something specific for the receiver.

I've no problem with buying smaller gifts that year because of the trip or if it's a trip to Disneyworld because the kids have been asking and asking and asking - then that is a birthday gift, got no problem with that either, but a family holiday is a family holiday not a birthday present.

I don't see how giving a child a lifetime experience doesn't could as a gift.
I've never understood giving presents on holidays or birthdays >_>

The big difference is that with a material gift, you can take it if you like it, or quietly pass it on to someone else if you don't. But with a holiday, you're compelled to go along with it. It is something which has been organised for you without your consent.

In my opinion, gifts should never be compelling.
