I don't think it's a good idea to gift holidays.
It reminds me of an incident when I was little. The first holiday we went on together as a family was in a caravan which my father bought a few weeks earlier. My brother didn't enjoy it at all, despite the fact that our holiday was meant mostly for him. He suffered being away from his friends, away from his music, and his electric guitar, and his computer games... he felt like he was just being dragged along to places my parents wanted to go, and at the end of the day returning to this little caravan alone in the middle of a dark field. He was miserable the whole week.
My father's mentality was always along the lines of "this is what we're doing, and non-enjoyment is not an option", truely believing that he could dictate what we did and did not enjoy. He was angry with my brother, he lost his temper with him a few times that week as I remember, and he felt that his "non-enjoyment" ruined the holiday. I quite enjoyed that holiday though. I thought it was a fun adventure, despite what went on between my father and my brother.
Now that wasn't a gift to him specifically, but it would have been a lot worse had it been presented as a gift.
