Vacations as presents

While websurfing I somehow managed to end up on a parenting site. One father there said that the family was going on a holiday to Europe and that it would count for the children's Christmas and birthday presents for the year.

Some of the other parents were horrified by this saying that family vacations should not be passed off as presents for the children.

What do you think?

Fun times spent together will be a more lasting gift to kids than stuff that will break and end up a landfill. I say it's a good gift. Unless the kids are trapped in a hotel room with babysitters the whole time.

A trip to Europe is a good chunk of change. Maybe they didn't have anything left in their budget for any big presents? I'm thinking expensive stuff like computer, gaming console, car, etc., not the $5 stuff from Walmart.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. It's not like he was trying to fob off a long-weekend camping trip as an xmas gift, a European vacation is expensive, a once in a life-time thing for many people.

^Exactly. I think, in the long run, travel to another country is far more valuable to a child than getting a ton of presents at Christmas.

I guess it would depend on how old the kids are, as well. Would they rather have a European vacation or a new video game? I'm sure plenty of kids would rather have the video game.

My parents took us to DisneyWorld this year as their big present to my wife and I and our kids. Because my mother cannot stand not to have something under the tree, there were a couple of little presents on Christmas morning, but we made sure that our kids understood that the trip was their main gift. Neither of them had a problem with that whatsoever.

I dunno, I don't see why that would change it. Sometimes you get to pick your gifts, sometimes you don't, but they are all still gifts.

I'm not sure a child would understand this, but I think it's a great idea actually that can produce much more good and lasting memories than a playstation or whatever.

Well, I guess it depends on how the parents present it.

"We're going to Europe for your birthday!"

OR

"We're going to Europe, and by the way, this counts as your birthday present."

Hmm, a trip to NY is more expensive than one to Amsterdam! :p

I think it all depends on the age of the kid. I wouldn't do that to an 8 year old. I suppose a teenager wouldn't mind it much.

I don't see what the problem is. Parents who are 'horrified' are clearly members of the 'children can only ever be happy with material things and anyone who doesn't spend like a loon for every minor occasion is a Bad Parent' club.

It depends. Did the child choose the destination?

Thanks for posting my opinions for me. Next time, ask before you root around in my brain. :p

This was my first reaction. If they're old enough to enjoy the activities and remember them, I think it's fine. If you're dragging a 5-year-old around Athens ... plan on getting the kid some presents to unwrap.

I don't think it's a good idea to gift holidays.

It reminds me of an incident when I was little. The first holiday we went on together as a family was in a caravan which my father bought a few weeks earlier. My brother didn't enjoy it at all, despite the fact that our holiday was meant mostly for him. He suffered being away from his friends, away from his music, and his electric guitar, and his computer games... he felt like he was just being dragged along to places my parents wanted to go, and at the end of the day returning to this little caravan alone in the middle of a dark field. He was miserable the whole week.

My father's mentality was always along the lines of "this is what we're doing, and non-enjoyment is not an option", truely believing that he could dictate what we did and did not enjoy. He was angry with my brother, he lost his temper with him a few times that week as I remember, and he felt that his "non-enjoyment" ruined the holiday. I quite enjoyed that holiday though. I thought it was a fun adventure, despite what went on between my father and my brother.

Now that wasn't a gift to him specifically, but it would have been a lot worse had it been presented as a gift.

I'm really you from the future. I've been trying to keep it a secret.
