Yeah each time both ships fired on the other, the others shields were down. From Kirk having his guard down, Enterprise using the command codes, then the nebula. Whatever that tells us

Assuming a fight to the death? Enterprise, because otherwise the scene breaks canon.

Ahhh, but what if they swapped crews? Kirk on Discovery and Lorca and Co on the Enterprise?

My money is on whichever ship Kirk is on.

Kirk was an excellent captain. Spock is - well he's Spock. Sulu is the best helmsman in the fleet. And then they have Scott working miracles in Engineering.

The only way Discovery wins would be by sheer dumb luck.

Many actual battles have been won by superior commanders whose forces were using inferior weaponry.

    Enterprise all day, every day.

Even if the Discovery is a newer ship with better technology, Pike and Kirk are better captains and their crewmembers didn't hate each other. Discovery's crewmembers are all so angry at each other that I'm pretty sure they would sacrifice themselves to see the rest of them die.

I just hope that Tilly and the doctor get to the escape pods before they do all off themselves. Those two are the only characters I feel an accessible connection to.

It's not USS Enterprise VS USS Discovery. But it would be more of Constitution Class Star ship versus Crossfield Class Star Ship. The obvious difference is their size. Constitution Class is definitely bigger than Crossfield Class. So they can bring more things than Crossfield.

And we should realize that There have to be a reason to call the Constitution Class as a Heavy Cruiser while the Crossfield as a Science Vessel. The Heavy Cruiser designation means that Constitution Class packed more weapons, better shield, thicker armor, etc. Or else they wouldn't call her as a Heavy Cruiser, but a Space Truck or Spaceliner.

It just the same as we compare a Arleigh Burke Destroyer to Olivier Hazard Perry Frigate. Who win? No body know. But USS Enterprise should has more advantage in combat than USS Discovery.

Captain Pike is already one of Starfleet's most decorated captains by 2256. USS Enterprise appears to be a choice assignment in the fleet.

Captain Lorca is running a high risk operation with a barely tested drive system that needs dubious navigation requirements from a retrofitted science vessel of unknown age. He's basically drafting officers to serve under him via a high level war clause. USS Discovery's other advantages are unclear at this time since we don't know enough about the ship outside its Spore Drive. We can't gauge its warp power, its shield strength....nor really its weaponry, though I imagine USS Enterprise wouldn't have as much trouble with six of these Birds of Prey. (regardless of if it had issues with a single Bird of Prey some thirty years later)

Wait a minutes, are we talking about Kirk vs Lorca or Enterprise vs Discovery? because they are different matter to discuss. If you want to talk about Enterprise vs Discovery, then we should strictly limit only to the ships specification. Not the one who drive them. We are talking about the gun, not the man behind the gun.

Talking about Enterprise vs Discovery but comparing Kirk and Lorca is the same as you talk about the one who use them, while actually the topic is about Desert Eagle vs Glock 17. So please stick to the topic and take Kirk and Lorca out of the discussion.

We don't have enough data on USS Discovery in terms of armaments, shield strength, and aside from her Spore Drive, speed to compare it to USS Enteprise (plus Enterprise possibly has a lesser refit between the Cage and Kirk's Five Year Mission).

We think we know a lot about Enterprise with the general assumption that she is a heavy cruiser type ships and a deep space explorer and all round general all purpose starship that can be tasked to do just about anything Starfleet wants it to do.

USS Discovery is suggested to be a large science starship that may or may not be adequately fitted out for combat. She may or may not be fitted out for exploration duty. She is probably not designs to do anything Starfleet asks of it, but depending on what experiments are being run on the ship, she may be able to accomplish certain missions...possibly quicker that USS Enterprise....depending on what Discovery has onboard at that time.

We still aren't clear how large Discovery is compared to Enterprise (as it was seem in the 2260s TOS model scale), though size might not matter all that much if one is fitted for combat and the other is making do with what it has.

The discovery could appear out of nowhere and attack the Enterprise before they have time to raise their shields

I found this post because I wanted to see a size comparison between the discovery and the Constitution class vessels for a game I have been playing and I kinda want to put my 2 cents in. First the Reliant vs Enterprise is a poor example, Kirk was running a ship on a training cruise with cadets, he wasn't expecting combat, and he certainly wasn't expecting another federation ship to attack. He let it get too close trying to assess the situation and was caught shields down taking a direct hit to the warp core. From then on the entire battle was fought on auxiliary and impulse power. Which I am pretty sure are smaller batteries than a warp core. Reliant was mostly fully operational they entered the nebula to even the odds. There is also a scene where Mike is running with her friend and as they run she is outlining a career path for her friend, that path is to get assigned to a Constitution Class starship; this indicates that a Constitution Class is still a primary fleet station and a choice assignment.
Federation Ships are funny they are firstly science and exploration, defense is secondary and they often use their knowledge and science to bring tactical advantages, with that said the Constitution Class is an Exploration Cruise and Flag Cruiser for fleet roles, meaning it would generally hold the Flag Admiral and the decision making staff. A Miranda has been described as a Mid Range Explorer and Escort Cruiser/Light Cruiser and by TNG a Destroyer/Transport/Support ship. The Discovery, albeit little is really known, seems to be a science vessel. It has about 153 crew, according to memory alpha, to the Constitution Class's 400 +-. This is a big advantage more crew more responders, more personnel working damage control, more people to fill stations as casualties rise. On ships, in reality, a cook isn't just a cook they are trained to know what to do when things get rough and I would assume starfleet would implement similar cross training so that all personnel are ready and capable to do what they can to keep the ship running and fill vacant positions of importance. Newer doesn't mean more powerful it just means newer. Yes it would have some system improvements but the Constitution was designed to be fleet command/Diplomatic Exploration Cruiser and the most powerful ship in the Federation fleet at that time, Discovery was not built to fill that role, it was seemingly built to be a mid range exploration and science vessel. A new ship to fill the Fleet Command/Long Range Exploration role doesn't come out until the Excelsior Class and perhaps the Lexington, Uysses, Missouri, and Yamato Class ships role off the line (the latter are from Klingon Academy and may not be considered cannon). So until then the Constitution is the "Big Stick" in the Federation tool box. As for the spore drive I cannot give it that much of a + for Discovery. Yes they can pop in and surprise a Constitution but so can a cloaked ship the difference is a cloaked ship can appear and disappear over and over; I don't think Discovery can do that in ship to ship engagement. As we know the Enterprise has stood against 2 and 3 ships cloaking and de-cloaking in engagements and many of them were K'Tinga/D7 Battle Cruisers and Warbirds, both I think would be more powerful than Discovery. Lastly the Bird of Prey; what is a Bird of Prey? There are atleast three of them, 4 if you count Enterprise. Br'El, K'Vort, and D12. They are all different sizes and capabilities from Oberth Size to nearly the size of the 1701-D's saucer section. It is also a bad example to point out that a bird of prey killed the Enterprise because the Enterprise, at that time, had a crew of 4 or 5, was damaged to the point of decommissioning, and was stolen in haste to rescue spock; I don't think it was well supplied and equipped for any tactical engagement. Also the Birds of Prey Discovery is running into seem smaller more like attack shuttles that traditional Birds of Prey. Bird of Prey also seems to be a loose term for any light fast attack ship suitable for scouting, hit and run tactics. So with all that said I would have my money on the Connie...

Maybe Mudd did try that with Kirk and found there wasn't a way to get by like he could with Lorca, and instead did what he did the three times he encountered Kirk, as the best possible outcome.

I'm pretty sure that there was a line IN SHOW about discovery being primarily a science vessel. I may be wrong but i'm 90% sure.

Enterprise was a heavy cruiser, it was designed to be a tough as nails ship, it is 12 years old but after a refit was still durable as heck 20 years later.

So i have to go with the Enterprise
