USA distribution -CBS All Access discussion

It looks like CBSAA and Showtime are lining their ducks up for this year:

Showtime Adds Download Option to Mobile Apps
Premium programmer extends download support to its standalone OTT service
Showtime said subs can take advantage of the feature by tapping the “Download” button on a program’s detail page. Viewers on smartphones can choose to download the title in standard definition (540p) or high definition (720p), and tablet users will have the added option to download a program in 1080p. Once downloaded, viewers can access them by tapping the “Download List” icon in the top navigation bar of the app.
Veale also confirmed that Showtime created the new download feature in partnership with Penthera alongside internal development by Showtime, and that virtually all of Showtime's content library supports downloading rights.
And here is the quote where CBSAA should be included but is not....!
Showtime joins a growing list of programmers and subscription video services to add app-based download options, including Epix, Starz, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video

Will CBSAA add a download option for Star Trek Discovery ?
I will guess season 1 no download option. When season 2 hits then they raise the price and call this a new "feature" of CBSAA. Also in 480p not HD I'll bet since they say mobile app. Why would you need HD on a mobile device?! yeah right CBS nice try.

In case you were wondering who is Penthera: from their website
Penthera’s Cache&Carry is an award-winning white-label software tool kit that manages the secure download and storage of TV shows, movies, and other videos from the cloud to iOS and Android mobile devices.

Once downloaded, these videos are playable anytime – even if the device has poor or no network connectivity.
Cache&Carry makes TV EVERYWHERE truly EVERYWHERE!

This show will bomb due to poor distribution decisions. The ship looks ugly, too, and the time period in the Star Trek universe is meh.

While I have big doubts about Discovery, the show distribution ideas have been superb. Netflix is airing it worldwide the day after it's available in North America meaning it cuts down on piracy and means the worldwide audience matters for the 1st time in Star Trek history on TV. Netflix has basically covered the production budget and CBS will make money off the subscription based model in the United States too + SPACE have paid for the rights in Canada.

I agree the ship as we last saw it, was one the most hideous thing I've ever seen from Star Trek but it was a cheap ass CG Model so it may get better. The period is a mystery because before Kirk, little is known (books are not canon) so that appeals to me though I personally was hoping for the early Federation years not about 90 ish years in (is that right?). While I caught TOS reruns in the 90's on BBC 2 as a Kid, for me TNG onwards is the only Trek I care about (I do like TOS movies and reboot) so its a chance for me to be brought back to the original era of Trek but I hope they don't just chuck me in and expect me to know too much.

CBS have made a mess of getting the show up and running with delays but this show is all but guaranteed to get a 2nd year thanks to the Netflix deal.

CBS has already done the math on the distribution. Their expectation is that it will help drive All Access to 4 million viewers. They are getting revenue from Netflix on the international front to cover production costs. A show like Trek will be successful in that framework.

Voyager ran seven years with an ugly ship. For me, Discovery is a huge upgrade.

Meh. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. For me the USS Voyager is the best (or second best) looking of all the TV "hero" ships. But if the USS Defiant could last for 5 seasons so can the USS Discovery.

I thought it looked like a hand held garden shovel with warp nacelles. But, you are right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :techman:

It's almost like it was a business decision :wtf:

More bad news for Hulu as they'll probably lose another network (s) show library. And bad for all of us as every major network will want to have their own streaming service. All the cord cutting savings is going to go bye bye and we will be back where we were
