Us Damned Americans

Well here you go, script writer or Family Guy pulled the same crap about Pearl Harbor:

http://www.theage.com.au/world/family-guy-writer-sorry-for-japan-quake-joke-20110315-1busz.html

"In a message on Twitter about Friday's earthquake, scriptwriter Alec Sulkin wrote: "If you wanna feel better about this earthquake in Japan, google 'Pearl Harbor death toll."'

Then he tries to make out like it was okay when he thought less people died in Japan than have.. what an idiot.

 56 people. Including at least one duplicate person.

Out of over 100 million people in the United States on Facebook.

It's true. The monolithic group mind of America thinks like this. :rommie:

Yes. This represents absolutely EVERYBODY in America. Everybody said exactly this when they saw the videos of Japan burning.

Seriously. You judge an entire nation based on a little over 50 people? And other nations say we're arrogant...

Those are quite interesting reactions. In no way did JarodRussell state that those comments are representative of all Americans or even a majority, yet you all jumped to this conclusion.
On the other hand, the OP started this thread after seeing possibly anti-American comments on YouTube, which we hopefully all agree don't represent the whole rest of the world or even a majority of it, and drew the conclusion that everyone must hate America from those comments.

The whole point is that some people have terrible, prejudiced and moronic opinions and say them on the internet, that such opinions are levelled by people of all nationalities against any other nationality and that such comments are by no means representative of the majority opinion.

Or reducing Brazilians to football players and dancing, half-naked women at Carnaval...and everyone speaks Spanish there, apparently :vulcan:
Portuguese actually.
No shit, Sherlock. That was the point of the comment.

And I hate to break it to you but ... many American believe that France would currently be a colony of Germany if we warmongers hadn't dropped what we were doing and solve a little problem that apparently the French were incapable of handling on their own.
And that's on par with the jealousy meme. I was waiting for someone in this discussion to pull out the "we saved you in WWII so be grateful bitches" card.
QFT.

And just in case anybody forgot about the OP:
As I look more and more at the comments on videos like the above clip, it seems like everybody in the world hates Americans. Not just the politicians, every English-speaking person of European descent who just happens to have been born here. Whenever something bad happens, it's America's fault.
(...) Every time I turn around, read the newspaper, watch TV, flip on the radio, everybody in every inhabited continent is saying that every person living in America should just jump off a cliff for shame.

Ah. Sorry - the opening post, especially those bolded bits, was idiotic too for the same reason. My bad.

Also, since I wasn't really contributing to the thread as it went along - I hate "God Bless the USA" (Sorry J.), and I'm less than fond of the implication that my not having the money or opportunity to travel outside the country is a failure on my part.

The whole point is that some people have terrible, prejudiced and moronic opinions and say them on the internet, that such opinions are levelled by people of all nationalities against any other nationality and that such comments are by no means representative of the majority opinion.

:techman:

We didn't jump to any conclusion. That was clearly his message.

And we have had numerous Posts thereafter demonstrating not only hostility toward Americans, but incredible naivete about what America and Americans are like.

The whole point is that some people have terrible, prejudiced and moronic opinions and say them on the internet, that such opinions are levelled by people of all nationalities against any other nationality and that such comments are by no means representative of the majority opinion.
That was my point, actually.

We didn't jump to any conclusion. That was clearly his message.

No it wasn't.

Besides, accusing anyone on TrekBBS of being anti-American is ridiculous anyway; why would anybody who dislikes Americans frequent a message board about an American tv-show populated primarily by Americans? Is JarodRussell a masochist too?

Actually, I think considering that the point of the thread is to criticise people for thinking that all Americans are bigoted, it's easy to see why people might take such a comment attributed to simply "Americans" as being intended to re-enforce the idea that perhaps such a generalisation is in fact true.

In fact I doubt that was the intention, but I can see why people interpreted it that way.

Also, Iguana & CountZ pointing out how the OP descended into utter hypocrisy within a few lines, demonstrating exactly the foolish attitude he is levelling at others made me chuckle.

Iguana & CountZ should either be the name of an ice cream shop or a law firm. :D

If someone says
Inhabitants of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick like wine.
it is grammatically ambiguous whether the speaker means that "most do" or only "some do". This is probably a part of the whole problem.

I think that's unfairly harsh. Having utter hypocrisy implies being deceitful. There was nothing in the OP that suggests he was deceitful, as he openly admitted his perspective might be skewed. He just sounded confused and angry to me.

And I think the OP has a point that much media coverage these days focuses on polarizing extremes, thereby amplifying their significance to disproportionate levels. We should also be discussing the economics that drive this overfocusing on extreme viewpoints in the media. I think they are severely undermining the ability of the media to serve the public good by keeping us well informed.

True.

Yes, it is grammatically ambiguous, which is why the respondants took the context in which it was used to derive whatever meaning they did from it. Hence my comments.

He is applying a critical standard to others that he has not applied to himself, and if he did he would have failed to live up to it, criticising ALL Europeans for making assumptions about ALL Americans. One doesn't require perspective to realise that one cannot make assumptions about a whole continent of people based on what you see on TV, only common sense, the common sense he criticises others for not possessing.

Hypocrisy may be the wrong word, if anyone can come up with a better one, i'm open to suggestions

Right, so just assume the most stupidly absurd interpretation and go with the fake outrage. I got it.

I don't think it's a particularly absurd interpretation given the context of the thread, probably wrong, but not necessarily absurd. Several different people came to the same conclusion independently suggesting at least that the comment could have been worded more carefully.

I agree that one shouldn't. I agree that it is a significant error in judgment.
