US Airways plane goes down in Hudson River

I am glad that no one was hurt. Turns out that the pilot also operates a safety company. He did a great job with a very dangerous situation.

(I am being sincere, that is not sarcasm)

Fucktastic. There goes the "X years without a fatal accident" streak. :(

Look again. No fatalities and very few injuries. This could have been a hell of a lot worse.

This explains the media zoo in downtown Tempe this afternoon though (USAirways HQ).

The pilot is from Danville (Bay Area), California so there was a Media Blitz here too. I hope I don't come across as crass, but today is a good example of why I absolutely hate the news media. Some of the slogans for this was just awful and the continuous coverage of this I think is fucking lame. I'm glad everyone survived and it was not as bad as it could have been but good god leave them alone.

I suspect that if drying out and replacement of the engines the plane will fly again. ;)

Nah. An aluminum plane, full of mixed metals in salt water? That thing's a gigantic battery and will be corroding like a dead baby in nitric acid.

Hmmm, and just wondering, to those who saw part of the salvage operation, could you give any details?

The skill and cool headedness of the pilot and flight crew was nothing short of phenomenal.

My sister works for US Airways, in management. The company has some of the toughest training in the industry. A lot of people wash out because they think their training is unreasonably stringent in comparison to FAA minimum requirements and the training of other airlines.

This incident is proof that it works and is needed. What really warms me is to know that had my sister been on that plane, she would have performed at least as well as the members of that flight crew. When she was a flight attendant, her cool head, impeccable emergency training and 120lb self brought down a Iraq war vet who had a psychotic break on her plane and tried to open the door midflight.

An interesting aside, the pictures on the front page of MSNBC were taken by one of my classmates from photography school. Cool! I'm so glad to see he's succeeding as a photojournalist. He's very young - only around 24 years old - and already he's getting photo credit on major news outlets. :D

this pilot worked for the airlines for the last 28 years and before that was a navy f-14 pilot. he definatly had skills!

Latest reports suggest that just six minutes into the flight the plane hit a flock of geese, taking out both engines. As it was a short haul flight, the fuel tanks were nowhere near full, so air inside them kept the plane afloat for much longer than could have been the case.
The pilot did superb work landing level. Had he been off by only a few degrees one wing would have hit first, and the stress could have torn the plane apart. The cabin crew also showed the level of professionalism you'd want under these circumstances!

I have a picture file I use for wallpaper that has aircraft and space pictures. I took some images from yesterday and turned them into a collage for that file. If you want it, here it is:
