US Airways plane goes down in Hudson River

Man that pilot did a great job of landing on the water and not having the plane tear apart. Twas nice to finally have happy ending emergency news story for once.

It's not somewhere you want to be no matter the season :p

True that! (KM, still loves her former home city, but not the yucky Hudson!)

News saying it could have been catastrophic. Yeah, they could have hit the GW Bridge. Then we would have had an Air Florida Flight 90 situation. :(

Besides the GWB there's like what, 11 other bridges around that area it could've hit.

Yeah...I never liked taking off from La Guardia or JFK for that reason. Newark sucked, but no bridges...

Eh, JFK is huge though, more worry about LaGuardia considering it's a short runway and at the end is a mudpit.

Wonder if it'll fly again or if it's a total loss.

It crashed and sank into the hudson, you want to ride on it?

It started rotting immediately in that brown/green river of sludge.

Hopefully it didn't hit any tunnels at the bottom, if it's hit bottom yet.

Looked like they've towed it to some shallows.

Remarkable, amazing, and big Kudos to the pilot and other flight-staff for that landing.

Awesome work and I stand and give them an applause.

I suspect that if drying out and replacement of the engines the plane will fly again. ;)

Does anyone have video of the crash itself? I bet the second that gets uploaded to Youtube (assuming said video exists), their servers will crash.

I suspect if there WERE video of it it'd of been all over the news at this point and it'd be remarkable fortitude on the part of the videographer.

You're probably right. The weather there's probably not condusive for sight-seeing along the Hudson.

But, who knows? Something may turn up over the next couple of days.

Yikes. This Thread title scared the heck out of me. What a relief to see that everybody was saved. :bolian:

Considering the number of traffic cameras and fixed cameras for local television that are in major metropolitan areas these days, it's possible one of them in NYC caught part of it.

Early reports said they found three or four dead bodies in the river with the passengers, but they just turned out to be some missing mob informants.

Thankfully, someone was able to release George and Gracie out of the cargo hold so they could tell the probe to go take a hike.

I keep thinking of The Doctor gleefully yelling "everybody lives!!"
I know that from now on I'll always pay close attention when the flight attendant goes over the flotation collar demo.
I sure hope that the ferry company didn't charge the crash survivors for the ride.
I used to laugh at that card on the airplane seatback. You know, the one with the "in case of water landing" diagram that shows a completely intact airplane sitting in the water like it had been placed there? I used to think "yeah, like the plane will crash all in one piece like that". I am today humbled.
Not only did the flight crew do a 150% job today, so too did all the boat drivers. I can't believe that they didn't crash into the plane and break it up while maneuvering in close to pick folks up while contending with a current of several knots.
A great day, all in all.:)

Fucktastic. There goes the "X years without a fatal accident" streak. :(

Look again. No fatalities and very few injuries. This could have been a hell of a lot worse.

This explains the media zoo in downtown Tempe this afternoon though (USAirways HQ).

Re: Plane in the Hudson

If the problem occurred on takeoff, that would explain it. Loss of engine power without enough altitude to fly a full pattern leads to what is called the "impossible turn", where the pilot tries to do a 180 back to the runway and usually fails. This guy apparently made the better choice.

Looks like both engines took hits. The pilot was trying to return to LaGuardia but was advised to land at Teterboro, N.J.
