Unwatchable: "Justice"

I like Justice. But I also like Move Along Home. And I hate TNG's 6th season. And I love TOS's 3rd season. What's wrong with me?

One good thing I can say about it is that there are a lot more season one episodes that suck even more.

Although I rarely watch TNG anymore, I get depressed when Spike (or whomever is airing it) gets to the end of Season 7 because that means we're stuck with about a month of dreck as they get seasons 1 and 2 out of the way.

Sucky sets.
Sucky Uniforms.
Sucky lighting.
Sucky writing (if they didn't just rip it off of Phase 2).
Pulaski
Data being a retarded 5 year old child.
Wesley being Uber-pubescent-nerd.

Etc.

I'll admit, Season 3 is when Modern Trek truly came alive (can we still call it Modern trek?). But I quite enjoy Seasons 1 & 2.

The show hit the ground running, but they weren't really sure where to run at first. I dont think anyone ever expected TNG to be such a hit. I honestly don't. They all thought it might run a year or so. Nothing could surpass the original series, could it? Took them a couple of years (and Michael Piller) before the show got really, really good.

I like S1 & 2 though. They are far from perfect but they both have some quirky charms. Both have episodes that are extremely poor (Angel One & Up the Long Ladder - I'm talking to you) but I still prefer them to much of the bland Season 7 dross.

How can anyone not love The Planet Of The Jogging Bimbos? especially when one of them was Brenda Bakke?

I alsways thought it was refered to as:

"The Planet Where They Actually Find Out Victoria's Secret (She a Slut.)" ;)

I enjoy this ep kinda because it's pretty cheesy. One thing though, this is the ep that ruined the term "away team" for me. When I hear "landing party" I think of adults on serious business. When I hear "away team" I think of Wesley skipping gaily through the meadow.

I love this episode if only because it was responsible for my first sexual experience.

A mate and I were watching the bit with the muscular guy being massaged and I could tell he liked it. I had the remote so I kept rewinding it over and over. He soon got REALLY interested and asked me to his room.

THANKS "Justice"!!!

Whatever gets you to bed at night.

;)

Oh, it puts me to bed alright. With a bad headache and a sick stomach.

Robert

just curious, do the in/famous Wesley lines of:

"There are some games I don't quite know yet."

and

"I'm from Starfleet. We don't lie."

sit well with you too? ;)

oh come on. 'justice' has a few acutely embarrassing moments (ie, the junior-captain-video-space-cadet "i'm with starfleet...we don't lie") but "unwatchable" -?!? hardly. there's a GREAT worf scene, some cool data stuff, and what could be the earliest example of the Inspirational Picard Speech. i remember seeing this one on first run and listening to the aforementioned speech and thinking how well they were nailing the classic trek feel. this is a "message" show, and - in retrospect - it's well-meaning but clumsily obvious message is part of what's so endearing about this one - for me, anyway. it very much has the stamp of roddenberry all over it - the good and the bad.

"unwatchable" is an adjective i'd reserve for odious shite like "cost of living," "imaginary friend," "i borg," or "sub rosa" - not to mention the entire VOY series.

That made me laugh. Mentally Wesley, just how old are you? Six? Not to mention fourteen year olds running around tossing a ball back and forth. If I was fourteen I would've been trying to put the moves on that girl.

Actually I have to take some of that back. I used to run around a lot when I was 14. I was on the track and field team at school. My best event was broad jumping. Heh, I was a pretty good broad jumper ON the field but off the field I wasn't quite so sucessful at jumpiing broads i.e., playin' the field.

I wouldn't call Justice unwatchable. Is it embarassing, yeah kinda but it does have an interesting premise, dealing with issues of capital punishment that does make some interesting arguments. Only problem is like much of season 1, it could have been executed a lot better.

I've already stated that I believe "Justice" is an excellent Prime Directive episode. When I think about it, it would have been a lot more powerful if it had occurred much later in the series.

Picard established himself as a Prime Directive fundamentalist over the course of the series. It would have been interesting to have Data take him to task to explain his refusal to let the Edo execute Wesley (or another character in his place) in light of his other very conservative Prime Directive decisions.

The problem with a lot of TNG's early episodes were not their basic storylines, but their brutal execution. There was next to no subtlety or complexity. If they'd had more of the polish and finesse of TNG's 3rd season then more of the early stories would have been much better. You get to see this with some of the better efforts of 2nd season.

The episode was good as showing the dramatic shift from Kirk's complete disregard for the Prime Directive-- but this and "Code of Honor" are also perfect examples of Picard following the prime directive to the point of being ridiculous. Fortunately, he doesn't act this stupid again until "Homeward" in Season Seven.
