Unresolved Shows

After hearing about the demise of a few shows this season, and remembering Journeyman's quick wrap-up (at least it got one), I was wondering about other shows that never got a chance to resolve their MAIN series story arc.

One famous one I remember from many years ago was Coronet Blue. A guy woke up without his memory and the only two words he could remember were "coronet blue".

It was a summer replacement series on CBS, I believe, and a few episodes dealt with possibilities that ended up being wrong, but we never found out who this guy was or what the words meant.

Any other shows you remember whose general premise was never resolved?

Threshold. I'm still upset about that one. The few unaired episodes on the DVD were sort of leading to some sort of resolution because they knew it was cancelled, but they are still very open-ended and don't answer any questions. It's not really the kind of show that could be resolved in a few episodes anyway. That's like giving Lost four episodes to end the entire series. I wish that Threshold had been able to continue because I genuinely wanted to know how things turned out.

Actually that's not true; they didn't get the cancellation news until they were filming the last episode. So they weren't able to do anything more than tack on a cursory dream/vision sequence on the end where the heroine was told that they would succeed eventually. The unaired episodes are definitely building up to something, but they were kicking the arc into high gear, not heading toward a resolution. It was just the beginning of something that would've been very complex, serialized, and impressive, but that got nipped in the bud.

Supposedly all was finally going to be revealsed about the Centre and Miss Parker in the 3rd telemovie but that ain't gonna happen.

This will be resolved in novel form. There are already two 4400 novels out that are set during the series, and there are two more coming up that continue on from the finale.

The Fugitive, Tim Daly version.

Kimble catches up to the one-armed man. The fed helping Gerard shoots Gerard! The fed sees Kimble and one-armed man fighting and shoots one of them, but we don't see who. Season over. Series canceled.

Miracles, Jericho, Invasion and Carnivale are all ones I wanted to see resolved.

Now we can add Pushing Daisies to the list!

Nowhere Man

Threshold is what immediately came to mind because it's a fairly recent show. I tend to think the worst things are shows that last for several seasons before getting cancelled on a cliffhanger. One would hope the network would at least have the decency to allow a follow-up for fans of the show.

With DVDs, I'm hoping that'll change (since even shows with poor ratings sell DVDs and the people who buy them want an ending), although Threshold started after DVDs were well-established and that didn't really get much of a chance to end itself.

Nowhere Man

Didn't Nowhere Man have a quick resolution where we learned the lead was actually a spy and willingly had himself brainwashed ... not unlike a certain Schwartzenegger movie?

I didn't watch Las Vegas, but weren't they in like their fifth season when the strike hit? And they just decided to not make any more new episodes despite the fact that the last episode they filmed was the first part of a two-parter?

Rembrandt jumps into an unstable vortex as an attempt to return home and save the world. We'll likely never know what happened to Remmy after that vortex sputtered out and closed.

I still haven't forgiven CBS and NBC for Now and Again , Earth2 and Dark Skies. I'm sure there are others.

Twin Peaks ends with at least six continuing plots up in the air, a few characters dead or possibly dead, and the main character in extreme trouble.

The Prisoner ends with easily the greatest mindfu*ck in television......it's intentional, but it leads a lot in the air to say the least.

Can't think of anything else from the stuff I watch.

Boomtown. We never get to find out what happens to David McNorris and crew.

Now and Again. That one really made me crazy.

Earth 2, as mentioned above.

Blake's 7--well, sort of. I suppose Avon could have survived at the end. Maybe. But we'll never know.
