Unpopular Trek Opinions — What Are Yours?

Lets face it, you know Berman, Piller and Braga all snickered how silly TOS was behind Gene's back.
One day Gene will crawl out of his own grave, just so he can urinate on theirs.

Actor Eddie Paskey (Lt Leslie) should have been in all 700 plus Star Trek episodes as various characters and aliens. It would have been fun trying to spot him in the back of crowd scenes and wondering just when he would come walking down the promenade.

TOS is garbage and shouldn't be considered canon. It was only thought of as good because most other tv and film up to that point was even worse garbage.

Star Trek began with the movies, established its foundation with TNG, and reached its full potential with DS9.
I want to congratulate you. You finally managed to post a really unpopular opinion in a thread which, despite being called Unpopular Trek Opinions, is mostly filled with rather common or not particularly controversial opinions. You were so successful that a bunch of people got outraged and started attacking you for several pages.... but then an even more amazing thing happened. Even though you are one person, you got promoted to the status of the majority or general opinion of not just all fans of TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT, but also the writers and producers of those shows, and finally, the opinion of the shows themselves, which are apparently sentient. :rommie: :cardie: :wtf: :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Yeah, I assumed it was mostly uncommon for a Star Trek fan to not like Star Trek. But to me, TOS only lasted 3 seasons, and should only be considered an extensive concept brainstorming session. Great things came from it decades later, but the show itself is just garbage.

Here's another one that I also think is uncommon among these parts:

NuTrek is not canonically connected to the rest of Star Trek in any way, even before the Kelvin incident. The filmmakers were only catering to us fanboys by saying "yeah guys, this is the Trek you all know and love, it's just that time travel spawned an alternate universe, so come see our movie."

No. It's just a straight reboot having nothing at all to do with the previous franchise, just like Batman Begins.

We may disagree about TOS, but here we agree.

I'm sorry. He had it coming. He got me mad.

but I think of it more as a nice novelty addition to the franchise, which I believe would do just fine without it.

I'm sure the rest of the franchise would be fine without the following:

The Starship Enterprise
Vulcans
Romulans
Klingons
United Federation of Planets
Starfleet
United Earth Space Probe Agency
Phasers
Photon Torpedoes
Transporters
Warp Drive
Zephram Cochrane
Andorians
Tellarites
Kang
Kor
Koloth
Montgomery Scott
Leonard McCoy
Spock
Dilithium Crystals
Psi 2000 virus
Saucer separation
Prime Directive
Number One
Cestus III
Orions
Orion Slave Girls
Pike City
Tribbles
The Starship Defiant

What is people's fascination with eliminating Star Trek from the franchise? Is it some type of jealously?

You didn't read what I said carefully. I said the franchise would be fine if there hadn't been the first "Star Trek" series BUT EVERYTHING AFTER IT HAPPENED JUST AS IT HAS. Don't think so literally.

Yes, all of those things appeared first in the original series and were carried on to later shows, but I was suggesting an alternate reality where they still existed despite not originating on that show. Yeah, it's a wacky and implausible idea (and now that I think about it, makes "Trials and Tribble-Ations", my favourite DS9 episode, pretty much impossible), but just go with me on this.

And make no mistake about it, I love "Star Trek"...just not as much as the even numbered movies (except "Nemesis"), most of TNG, and most of DS9. I was just saying it's my least favourite series of the franchise. Least favourite is still a favourite.

Season Three of "Star Trek" is more fun and quirkier that S2, thus "better." I used to just accept the party line that S3 is crap until owning and watching it as a whole. S2, they get into a rut and churn out "Star Trek shows": Kirk and Spock on the ____ (Nazi, Roman, Gangster) planet, then they escape.

For me, season 3 is no different from 1 or 2 in respect to "good" or "bad" episodes. All three had both.

What made season 3 stand out for me was that it had some of the best music the series produced.

I wouldn't go as far as 'garbage'.
~One third of the episodes is watchable.
The rest, though - meh. You need a lot of pink in your glasses to think they are anywhere near being good sci-fi.

JJ's Trek Wars is an unholy abomination of unprecedented proportions, and old Spock in that movie, is NOT the Spock we've been following for the past 45 years.

I find your belief system fascinating, as you can probably tell. :techman:

There's unpopular... then there's downright retarded. Which is what the above opinion is. Hmmm... I like everything Modern Trek swiped from Star Trek... but I think that Star Trek is garbage. By your logic, Modern Trek has to be garbage too, since it pretty much stole its entire concept (lock, stock and barrel) from Star Trek. And let's not forget that the massive ratings slide began with the series that reached Trek's full potential, Deep Space Nine. :techman:

I liked TOS season three. There, I said it :p

It seems the general consensus is changing as people consider not the utter dogs, but the whole season.

Watched Elaan of Troyius Special Edition last night and had forgotten how entertaining the episode was. This is an instance where the upgraded SFX really helped the episode.

Very fitting for a franchise that originated from a show that was in danger of cancellation throughout its run and was eventually cancelled after its third season. :bolian:

Back then the ratings were not very well measured, for one thing, there was no differentiation between gender and age groups. When the new system came into place, after the cancellation, they went to once again redo the ratings, and Star Trek hit all the important target groups. If the new ratings systems had been implemented sooner, Star Trek would never have been in danger of cancellation.
