Universal Studios Classic Monsters Extended Universe - wuh?

It is

"What are...evening clothes?"

The first we see of him in the movie-- Radu Molasar (Rasalom) looked like a plasma torpedo ;)

I could tell it was a Mann film just by the look and the soundtrack.

Still, the scene where the camera pulls back and reveals this vast complex--like something from HPL's Rats In The Walls--good model work.

One upside to this movie existing: it all but guarantees an Honest Trailer for the greatest film of our time, The Mummy ('99). :D

This movie sure brings out the idiots who think the Brendan Fraser movies were the "original."

So, with the amount of apocalyptic damage in that trailer - is this cinematic universe going to have all these creatures publicly known? Like a reverse MCU, where everyone is terrified all the time because of the unstoppable monsters loose in the world?

Possibly, but I have a feeling the other movies will a lot less apocalyptic. I guess it's possible with some twisting of their characters, but I don't see characters like the Wolfman or The Creature from the Black Lagoon being able to take stuff to this level.

Right, but if this stuff is public knowledge, it also seems unlikely those characters will be able to stay secret very well. Unless it's all reported as a terrorist attack or something.

I wonder if they mean that literally, I would think they'd know that there were some old mummy movies around. If nothing else, this definitely looks like the spiritual successor to the Fraser movies than it does the mummy movies of old.

It would be interesting to see this Universe have the monsters as public knowledge. One thing that bugs me with the new Dr. Who is they kept having big invasions, but then had everybody write it off as something other than aliens.

On the one hand, it's true that this does seem to owe more to the action-packed Fraser movies than the more low-key Universal and Hammer mummy films. On the other hand, yes, sadly, there are tons of people who assume that no pop culture ever existed before the earliest works they're personally familiar with. In my experience, for example, a lot of people seem to think Flash Gordon originated with the 1980 movie. And then there were all those people who ragged on Jerry Goldsmith for "stealing the TNG theme" for Star Trek V.

Anyway, I noticed that the Mummy's character name is Ahmanet, which is a variant spelling of the name Amonet, an Egyptian goddess who was the consort of Amon. In Stargate SG-1, Amaunet was the name of the Goa'uld who possessed Daniel Jackson's wife and was married to the archvillain Apophis.

Meanwhile, am I the only one who's totally creeped out by that shot of her irises splitting in two? Seriously, I can barely stand to look at that.

Nope, not just you. Totally creepy. I can barely stand to look at a goat's eyes, which are somewhat similar.

Me too, anything to do with eyes freaks me out. I still have trouble with the needle going into Picard's eye every time I watch First Contact.
I was looking at the Creature from the Black Lagoon on Wikipedia the other day, and I was shocked to see it only had two sequels and no remakes. I would have expected a monster that iconic to have gotten more movies, although he did make some smaller appearances in other movies and on TV.
Speaking of Gill Man, his new movie has netted the writer of Aquaman for it's script.

I actually had to live through that when I was in high school and developed a retinal melanoma. I had needles stuck behind my eye a lot, and it wasn't fun, but I kinda got used to it. But my father was totally squicked out by it and couldn't stand to watch. In a weird way, it's a bit easier when it's being done to your own eye, because then you don't have to see it. Still hurts, though.

But the trilogy they did make is surprisingly cohesive, despite changing the main characters each time. Here's my blog review from 2013:

The Gill-Man was the last of the Universal Monsters, originating in the '50s, and maybe that's why he had so few movies compared to the others. Although with so many monster movies in the '50s and '60s, that's a bit counterintuitive.

I definitely need to check out more of the Universal Monster movies. I think I've seen The Mummy, the first Dracula, and TCftBL.

That passage freaked me out more than all the Universal Monster and Hammer Horror films combined.

People are already ragging on the upcoming remake of THE FLY for trampling over the sacred memory of the 1980 movie with Jeff Goldblum. "Hollywood has run of out of ideas! Why can't they do something original?"

Never mind that the 1980 movie was a remake of the classic 1954 movie with Vincent Price . . ...
