UNIT and Moffat/Smith

Whofan

Fleet Captain
UNIT of course appeared frequently in the RTD/Eccleston/Tennant era, although we didn't really get an 'action' UNIT story in the traditional sense until the Sontarans. Of course the spin-offs also featured UNIT as well, most recently I believe in Death of the Doctor.

However, it's been a while since there's been a UNIT story, and I'm curious how Moffat would handle it. Also Smith's Doctor seems more cooperative/comfortable with higher authority than Tennant. Also perhaps it would be an oppurtunity to note Nicholas Courtney's/The Brigadier's passing.

they don't need to note The Brig's passing. he can just be off in Peru or on the Moonbase or something.

no doubt Moff will bring back UNIT when he has a story worth using them in, like anything else from old Who, whether it's the Master, the Monk, the War Chief, Ice Warriors, Zgons, Zarbi or Quarks...

One of things that have annoyed me is how Nicholas Courtney death has all been ignored by the Who fandom.

That being said, they should bring UNIT back if they can get Colonel Mace back as well.

I wouldn't say it was ignored-it's just Elisabeth Sladen's passing had more impact among new fans because of her appearences in new WHO and of course SJA. Courtney only appeared briefly in SJA, so a lot of new fans were mostly unaware of him.

I say a little UNIT goes a long way.

Used (or mentioned) several times durin' the first four & a half seasons, and then again for SJA & Torchwood, its obvious they're around & still doin' stuff. And, as seen in Planet of the Dead, direct contact with the Doctor is a big deal, so the fewer times it happens, the better.

The whole idea of secret UNIT prisons gave me the willies.

I'd love to get into that.

Watching all the bastards the Doctor handed over to the authorities getting water boarded and shanked in the lunch line trying to dodge beatings from humans thugs in little red berets.

And then some bright spark starts putting together a dirty dozen team of aliens and criminals to defend the Earth...

(I really like the Breakout Kings)

I didn't see anyone ingnoring Nicks death. There was lots of discussion here and on GB. I think the difference is we all knew Nick was getting up in years, and losing him at some point was to be expected. Losing Liz Sladen was almost totally out of the blue. She still seemed so healthy and energetic. Most of us expected she'd be with us for at least another decade or two.

As for UNIT, I can take or leave them these days. They're not exactly the same organization we knew and loved. I could quite easily see them becoming villains at this point.

UNIT was used as a villian in SJA 'The Death of the Doctor'.

And they seemed pretty harsh in Planet of the Dead...

Well, their commanding officer seemed harsh. Lee Evans was the opposite, and the rest of UNIT seemed to be simply following orders, IIRC. They managed to hold off the few stragglers that got through the portal rather efficiently and the Doctor managed to virtually give them two new employees.

I recall the Brigadier talking about special weapons designed to fight the regular aliens in Battlefield and whatever became of field use of the disintergrator rifle used by the Giant robot?

Unit should have evolved well beyond small arms and fatigues by the 21st century.

Indeed. Last spring, I wrote an article in Whotopia called "The Knife at the Gunfight" about UNIT's utter lack of any real advanced arms and equipment.

You visit other BBSes? You're cheating on me? :(

Also ... If Moff does bring UNIT back, it'll be his chance to bring the hottie Ross back too. He never died on-screen, we only know for certain that he was shot *at*. Not necessarily even hit. :bolian:

Yes, but, if it makes you feel better, one is a B5 Board that is also visited by Jan and several other B5 fans from these parts. The other is a Stephen R. Donaldson site, where I do most of my political debating. I get most of my Dr Who here though :techman:

Who's Ross? Which episode are your referring to? I seem to remember thinking a UNIT guy was pretty nice looking lately

I too would like to see Moff do a UNIT stories. As others have mentioned, their weaponry isn't nearly as advanced as it should be, considering what they've had and done in the past.

"This is Ross, we like Ross."

10 was very playful with him in the Sontaran Stratagem.

He was like a cute fluffy bunny rabbit.

The impact of his death was marvellous, removing that dark gravity would be horrible and retroactively defang the original story matter.

Nope, not JMSNews, B5TV, another Antony Site.

I googled earlier and got an eyeful, too late in the day now to click on Google here at work
