UNIT and Moffat/Smith

Yeah, he betrayed UNIT in "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" (Possibly due to lingering effects from his brainwashing in "Green Death") but was recuperating in "Planet of the Spiders". Richard Franklin did make one final appearence as an illusion of Yates in "The Five Doctors". Plus he's Tom Baker's companion in a few audios.

Benton sells used cars around 1983 according to Mawdryn Undead.

One of things that have annoyed me is how Nicholas Courtney death has all been ignored by the Who fandom. .

They also should've gone out of their way to include Nicholas Courtney in the new series as well. Nice he was in SJA, but they blew it getting him back on to the main show.

I've always wondered why a self-confessed fan of the show such as RTD never did anything with Lethbridge-Stewart.

I've always wondered why a self-confessed fan of the show such as RTD never did anything with Lethbridge-Stewart.

A couple of reasons:

-The issue of rights with the writers who created the Brigadier. According to The Writer's Tale, RTD and gang had to jump through a lot of hoops to get permission to have the Brigadier in an episode of SJA. So much so that at one point they were considering giving up.

-Nicholas Courtney wasn't in the best of health the last few years. There were plans for him to be in more SJA episodes, which had to be re-written upon learning he was unavailable.

^ Should've gone through those hoops to get him on Doctor Who instead!

I too moan the fact that we never saw the Brigadier in modern Who. However, thinking, when was his SJA appearance, 2008? I'm not really sure how he could have fit into the Doctor Who episodes that's year. There's no way he could have worked in the Sontaran two parter. I suppose he could have been squeezed into The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, but that story is already unearably fanwanky in the extreme.

I do remember early rumours for Planet of the Dead indicating the Brigadier would appear. Obviously that didn't pan out, but I can only see a cameo working there.

I had been thinking last Saturday that the Doc might have Nixon place a call to PM Harold Wilson to confirm he's a UNIT guy (which he WAS in 1969. Or was that 1979?) <:-)

Well, the commanding officer in the Sontaran two-parter seemed rather a decent guy. Wouldn't mind seeing him back again.

A very good question posed earlier about UNIT using more advanced weapons. All i can assume is they don't get in nearly enough firefights to justify issuing them.

Maybe the higher-ups are worried about disintegrator rifles somehow falling into the wrong hands. Someone figures out how to mass-produce them, and next thing you know some third-world dictator decides he's going to be the next Napoleon.

UNIT doesn't have advanced tech? That must be news to whoever helped build and served on the Valiant. After all, not every country has a flying aircraft carrier.

Well, aside from the fact that Colonel Mace has been transferred to Vancouver (according to Torchwood) I see no reason he can't return.

Hmm, I suppose next season's premiere could be filmed in Vancouver. Just the sight of the TARDIS materializing in that omni-present pine forest...

Yeah, I know. Doctor Who filmed in Vancouver, been there, done that.

Well its about bloody time too. The Doctors been to Scotland, and has had American and Aussie companions. I don't think Canada has ever gotten so much as a mention on the show.

So, one extremely minor reference (so minor I don't even remember it) in the actual DW series. With all the rest being in spin-offs, novels, etc, which don't count, we're really getting shafted. We've had more references in Star Trek. Considering our involvement with DW... I demand action dammit! Canada demands recognition in Doctor Who!

^^Also, Michael Eddington had Canadian ancestry and always carried his Lucky Loonie (a Loonie is a one dollar coin in Canada).

Seriously? A show that was created by a Canadian doesn't mention Canada at all for the first time until 46 years after it first aired? Yeah, I know it's a British show, and in fairness other countries don't really get mentioned that often either. But still, damn.

I haven't seen Torchwood, well not a lot of it. But I don't really get why there is "The UNIT" and Torchwood. Shouldn't Torchwood be part of The UNIT?

how often did Wales or Scotland get mentioned until the nu show? how often does Northern Ireland get mentioned?!

Off the top of my head, The Green Death takes place in Wales and the Second Doctor had a Scottish companion.

Here's what TARDIS Index Files has to say on the the three nations:

Wales
Scotland

Northern Ireland has only been mentioned once in Doctor Who, in The Beast Below. That's so obscure that TARDIS Index Files just lumps it in their page about Ireland.

I haven't seen Torchwood, well not a lot of it. But I don't really get why there is "The UNIT" and Torchwood. Shouldn't Torchwood be part of The UNIT?

Torchwood was established by Queen Victoria with the express mandate to defend the UK from alien threats. UNIT was established by the United Nations to defend all Earth.
