Uniforms

Since Discovery is supposed to take place 10 years before TOS, and some three years after the events of the cage, will they use either the TOS or the cage uniforms? Why shouldn't they anyway? Is it credible to use those uniforms nowadays? Even if they'd keep the style but polish it like they did in the Kelvin universe it would not make much sense... what are your thoughts on this one?

I'm sure they'll be new. Hopefully they'll be interestingly different - not variations on jumpsuits like the last three or four versions. Maybe, I dunno, they'll look like uniforms.

I think there will be a subtle nod towards the TOS uniforms (in that we may see the traditional gold, red, and blue department colors used in someway), but otherwise it'll be as if "The Cage" or "Where No Man Has Gone Before" uniforms never existed, IMO, and that these new uniforms are what led into the TOS ones.

I'd rather see butterscotch turtlenecks, than another set of coveralls.

Stranger than the TOS uniforms leading into TMP uniforms leading into TWOK uniforms? Starfleet clearly doesn't mind mixing things up a bit sometimes.

Given Fuller used the term "re-imagining" many times when referring to this show, don't expect the uniforms to be like TOS.

And why should they be? As fans, we need to accept that the visuals of Trek HAVE to be updated without a fear of clashing with established continuity. It's the story stuff that's important, and how Discoverh fits in to the Trekverse. Visually, this show is being made 50 years after TOS, and I WANT to see that reflected on screen.

If they wanted to connect to any other show though, I'd much rather they followed ENT's lead than TOS's, personally.

I'd like them updated like we saw in the Kelvin movies. Keep the colours bright, avoid the TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT shoulder stripe (which even made its way into Beyond's Yorktown and Franklin unis!) and I'm happy.

I could see them using something like the Kelvin uniforms from Star Trek (2009), either that or something like the pants and an Army Combat Shirt-esque top. Personally, I'd like them to keep the bright colors for dress uniforms, rather than the everyday working unis (which IMO should be more subdued ala the Kelvin or Cage unis).

I get the feeling they'll be different all together - some colour in there to indicate respective departments, but the USS Discovery is supposed to be a secret joint Federation/Klingon venture so I get the feeling they'll be darker.

They should have different uniform variants. Have the uniform from 'The Cage' be kind of a utility uniform, but introduce something a little more stylish to use as a service uniform. That way you have your nod to canon, but also have an updated look.

As you can tell from my avatar photo, I am a big fan of the Cage uniforms.

I'd be OK with them or something similar. Or, something new altogether as long as it looks good and isn't misogynistic. Would make sense to at least keep the colors straight.

Not a fan of the Abrams uniforms.

Very convenient, but it would save the day. They could even create an inside joke: other ships' crews would wear The Cage uniforms, and they would complain about the fact that the crew from Discover has sleeker newer uniforms..
