Uniforms

I know most people hate the TMP uniforms, but I liked the variety of styles they had. Everyone was in uniform but a version that they preferred, so they weren't all wearing the same thing.

I do think the First Contact uniforms were the best so far.

I liked the new DS9 uniforms, but only had one issue with them. it seemed that there was no standard for where someone could zip/unzip the jacket to. Some characters wore it zipped just to the bottom of the grey portion where other wore it zipped further down. As a military man that drove me nuts!

And as for the military, yep, always changing. I joined the US Army in '97

I've worn four different combat/work uniforms (BDUs, DCUs, ACUs, and OCP-A aka multicam)
two different PT uniforms
and three different dress uniforms (Class As and its variant as Bs, Dress Blues, and now ASUs)

The military loves to change it uniforms!

One of the few differences between Starfleet and today's militaries. But those uniforms could be worn with the sleeves pushed up or with the branch-colored duty undershirt unzipped if environmental or work conditions warranted. In that sense, they doubled both as standard duty uniforms and work fatigues, IMO.

Supposedly Rick Berman et. al. didn't like the way the uniforms worn on Next Gen from seasons 3-7 looked on the big screen in Generations... in fact, they had designed new uniforms for that movie but didn't use them. So, when they got to First Contact, they introduced the gray-tops as a suitable (no pun intended) replacement. DS9 got them at about the same time because as Khan said, "We're all one big, happy fleet."

I was in the Air Force... when they introduced the shorter blue overcoat, they specified it had to always be zipped when worn but I don't recall further guidance on how far up it needed to be zipped. I must not have been the only one confused based on the wide range of zipping I subsequently observed....

From what I understand, the GEN uniform redesigned were just sketches, not actually made...the only evidence left of 'em is the line of action figures that came out.

I'm really glad they didn't use that design, though. Too much of a mix of TOS movie era & TNG.

The gray-shouldered uniforms are a much better alternative.

Though my favorite is still the color-shouldered jumpsuits introduced with DS9, followed by the gray-shouldered jumpsuits.

Eh... they were actually made.

IIRC, there's a deleted scene on the Duras BoP where Geordi has one of them. Anyway, I totally agree that these uniforms are underwhelming, but they would've been better as the actual show uniforms.

The action figures made with the new uniforms. These... might not have been so bad, but pretty much a lateral move from the existing TNG uniforms.

You know, there's one thing about Starfleet uniforms that's always bugged me a little. Most of the time it's obvious that they're one-piece jumpsuits, but then they have this miraculous ability to transform into a two-piece jacket and trousers combo. How exactly does that work?

Because it would just be terrible for the audience to see something as functional as a zipper.

It's a good thing I wasn't the costume designer. The men would all be in the standard uniforms. The women would all be wearing boy shorts, sports bras, and go-go boots.

There's a Mirror Universe in ENT? Oh, goodie. That's something I'll look forward to with lively anticipation.
