Not everyone keeps their nipples in the same place. As opposed to constantly slapping their nipple?
I agree and it would be different. I love the idea. Why must the communicator be pinned on the chest? I think the belt would be better - easier to reach, and you could have a larger unit with more capabilities.

I thought about the Dick Tracy option, but having to hold your wrist near your face (and probably pressing a bunch of buttons) seems a bit primitive at this point.I think they should go with the TMP wrist communicators.

My idea with the belt-mounted comm is that it could emit a holographic display in front of the wearer. You could see the person you're talking to, or anything they want to show you. You could also operate a virtual computer console.
(In actuality, I think augmented reality via contact lenses is more likely, but it would be harder to represent dramatically.)
If you want to go with the "hard light" option, the belt comm could also function as a personal shield.

That would be cool to see. Quite futuristic in description.I thought about the Dick Tracy option, but having to hold your wrist near your face (and probably pressing a bunch of buttons) seems a bit primitive at this point.

They show will look dated in a few years no matter what they do, there's no thing as a show that has timeless visuals, TOS has a 60s aesthetic, clothes, hairstyles, even the tricorder. TNGs early seasons couldn't have looked like an 80s tv show if they tried etc.Not sure I agree; a tricorder/communicator would just look like a smart phone on screen and quickly date the show.
But the tricorder/communicators (communicorders?I do agree the comm badge had practical limitations, especially from a privacy point of view, but these also served a dramatic purpose - you always knew who was talking to whom, and could hear both sides without having to film the other half and cut to it. Walkie talkie like gadgets are easier story telling devices than phones, basically. I suspect we'll still have something like them in Trek17.
I have responded over in Pitfalls the new series should avoid. But if someone on a planet wants to speak to the away team's commanding officer for some reason it could make sense to use the video communication feature.
If they have this feature, wouldn't the writers have to keep coming up with reasons that the shield fails when the story needs someone to be shot?the belt comm could also function as a personal shield
Not a rank symbol, but something that could be taken from military uniforms is that daily wear uniforms are not form fitting. I've never worn one, but they look comfortable. What other symbols could be adapted from such uniforms?
Why not both?I was thinking about a comment on another thread, that T'Pol was the resident sex object. I suspect that we would see executive meddling to ensure that the next Trek has a resident sex object. Look for a younger woman dressed in mini-skirt or cat suit.
