Umm...Whoops?

Shore Leave. Kirk and Sulu are watching as a transporter beam appears. Sulu says "Someone... beaming down from the bridge." Um, from what I recall, people usually go to the transporter room for beam down. If he recognized the ears as belonging to Mr. Spock, a person normally stationed on the bridge, wouldn't he have just said "Someone... beaming down... it looks like Mr. Spock"? Maybe misread the script, which might have been "Someone... beaming down from the ship."

Also, a couple of times Kirk raises communication with the ship in an odd way. "Enterprise from Kirk" sounds awkward to me. The usual is "Kirk to Enterprise". I wonder if this was a script mixup or a flub on Shatner's part?

My guess is that this detail got lost in the writing. Someone you edit out one line and there are dead reshirts everywhere.

He may have said, "someone...beaming down, from the bridge", meaning someone from the bridge, not beaming down from the bridge. Although hearing it, it does sound odd.

I suppose it depends on the demands of the series and costs, but the TNG sets were cleaned regularly - before filming you weren't even allowed to walk on the newly-shampooed carpets, which were generally covered by brown paper.

Same with the "New Voyages/Phase II" starship sets, BTW.

Yes, if that was the case, then it meant he could see enough of the person to recognize them. Maybe the sleeve insignia was the give away? But then you'd expect that he'd notice the pointed ears and identify Spock rather than just "someone from the bridge." It would have been a little more logical for him to have said "Someone... an officer from the bridge, beaming down...", or better yet "Someone... it looks like Mr. Spock, beaming down..." :)

The script for "Shore Leave" was a royal mess, with most of the rewriting being done on location. It was Gene Coon's first week and Roddenberry was on vacation just before filming began, so it wasn't unusual to see GR sitting under a tree scribbling changes in between takes.

SULU
Someone beaming down from the ship...

Not to mention the uniform shirts got themselves shrunk in the Laundry!

I always loved how short the sleeves and shirt hems were in "Shore Leave" :)

There was a funny TOS interview about early days on the Desilu sets. If filming went beyond 6pm (or whenever), the studio was charged overtime by lots of organisations - and Lucille Ball herself used to turn up on the ST sets with a broom, sweeping the floor, to hurry things along.

That was in the Justman & Solow book. Sand from the sets was getting in the camera tracks and they needed to be swept out. They needed to finish filming and rather than wait for a teamster to get of his 18th coffee break, Justman and Solow (I think) started sweeping. They were joined by Lucy who then said "anything to get the wrap party started."

It's a cute story.

I love in "day of the Dove' Chekov is accosting Mara and his hands get covered in her Klingon makeup. Kirk then hits him and his hands hit the wall of the corridor..

check out the amazing amount of makeup that gets transferred to the wall.

I always think of it as sweat or blood from how hard Kirk strikes him. Makes the shot more realistic.

It's a well known fact that all Klingon women are dirty, slutty whores that wear too much makeup. And they probably wear "falsies" too........

I always thought Kirk beamed up the guys from Triacus before beaming down the ones who got killed. Or was that a different episode?

He couldn't have because they were no longer orbiting Triacus. That's why the guys who beamed down died. They got beamed into space!

TOS has had it share of oddities and mistakes since season 1.

01. "Mudd's Women" - I always found it strange that Kirk's, Spock's and Harry Mudd's hair was blowing in the wind as they started to materialize on that windy mining planet. You would think that the transporter beam would have provided some sort of force field around the person until they fully materialized to prevent eye injury from some small spec of sand blowing in the wind. Oh well, maybe that's just me being a little silly.

02. "Dagger of the Mind" - Dr. Adams and his assistant get knocked out by Kirk in the Neural Neutralizer Room and Kirk escapes. However, when we get back from the commercial break Dr. Adams is alone in the room and is subjected to the Neutralizer. What happened to his assistant, did he just get up and leave Dr. Adams there and not even bother turning off the Neutralizer before power is restored to the Neutralizer? I know, I may be just a bit silly.

03. "Space Seed" - Lt. McGivers rescues Kirk from suffocating. Kirk and Spock just leave her there in Sickbay. Kirk doesn’t say anything to her (because she is off screen but still in the room), for example stay here you will be safe or go with Mr. Spock and assist him. I know I guess I am being silly again. ;)

Well, in "Mirror, Mirror" there's a weird goof with Kirk when the transporter glitch happens. When he first gives the order to beam up, he puts his communicator on his belt. Then when the party materializes in the correct transporter room before fading to the MU, Kirk is holding it again. It's back on his belt when they appear in the MU.

In 'Piece of the.' as Kirk/Spock drive park at the gangster's HQ you see the boom mike in the shiny front fender of the fliver.

One of the few times you see actual stage features---as opposed to shadows of them on walls & faces.

I'd like to think there's a safety feature to prevent this sort of thing from happening, like a warning light popping up somewhere notifying the operator that he's about to beam someone into open space and do you really want to go through with this operation?, and that the two shmucks were just suspended in the transporter buffer for a while.
