U.S.S. Whachamacallit

sbk1234

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
With Trek games like Star Trek Online, you get the chance to christen your own ship and name it whatever you want. Just wondering, what have you named your ships, and why? Have you gone for seriousness, humor, sentimentality?

My ships were the

U.S.S. Patriot
U.S.S. Bunker Hill
U.S.S. Horizon
U.S.S. Discovery

Patriot and Bunker Hill were named for fan fiction ships of mine.
Discovery was named for the ship in 2001: A Space Odyssey
Horizon was named in memory of the most awesome, incredible attraction they used to have in Epcot in Disney WOrld.

My main ship in STO is the Intrepid-class USS Odyssey, NX-94276 - I'll sheepishly admit that I named it that way because it sounded *reasonable* at the time.

And that was two to three weeks before I watched DS9's "The Search, Part I", as well as a month before I found out I could claim the free Odyssey-class Star Cruiser in-game.

My Klingon General's a combat engineer and flys a Hegh'ta. Her main ship is the IKS Pein'an Deth. She also has a Kar'Fi carrier called the IKS No'az Arq.

My Fed Admiral, Naz Roshan, is a Tac. She flys a Maelstrom special/mix called the U.S.S. PARVANEH (pahr - vaa - neh) which means "butterfly" in Farsi.

I have TONS of others, but those 2 are my primary characters.

:vulcan:

I've been naming my escorts after mythical creatures:
A defiant called Basilisk.
A patrol escort called Manticore.
My current main ship is a fleet blockade escort called Banshee.
The heavy escort broke this a little and was called the Bonehunter, which is from te Malazan fantasy book series, a well I went to a few times for my KDF ships.

All other Fed ships, on the other hand, are named after people or places.
Tier 2 cruiser was the Nathanael Greene, American revolution general.
Exploration cruiser is the Edward Cope, a paleontologist.
Runabout called the Brandywine, a creek in Pennsylvania where a revolution battle was fought.
Assault cruiser called the Valley Forge.

For KDF ships and characters, I mined names from fantasy novels. Icarium, Barghast, Semirhage, Shaidar Haran.

My current main'S story is somewhat inspired by babylon 5 and Captain Sheridan, so I gave all his ships B5 ship names.

Culminating in the U.S.S. White Star, my new Sovereign Refit ship.

Nice thread idea! Naming ships is one of my favorite parts about leveling. I tend to name mine for fictional cities/areas, weather phenomena or something Dutch - and hopefully ending up with something not already in use. Here's some from my various toons:

  • U.S.S. Leyawinn (Maelstrom/Dervish hybrid, named for the city from Elder Scrolls: Oblivion)
  • U.S.S. Cairhien (Venture, named for the city in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series)
  • U.S.S. Mistral (Emissary/Nomad hybrid, named for the wind in southern France)
  • U.S.S. Van Leeuwenhoek (Nebula, named for the Dutch scientist)
  • U.S.S. Merwede (Danube, named for the Dutch river)
... and when starting a new toon, my Miranda is always named U.S.S. Tempest, for the ship of the same class from Starfleet Academy.

I have not made them, yet, but names of future vessels I plan to make include:

USS Cydonia: Based on the region of Mars that got me started into paranormal research, specifically UFO's and ET life.
USS Hoagland: One of my personal heros in regards to the paranormal researches I do.
USS Von Daniken: Another hero of mine.
USS Dogon: For one of the African tribes in what I study.
USS Zuni: For the Native Americans who are in my studies as well.
USS Tholus: For an interesting place on Cydonia.

Interesting the Tempast mention, for one of my character's personal ship (in my comic) is named the Tempest. :)

I am a big fan of all sci-fi, so my ship names reflect that.

When I first joined the game, I named my ship the U.S.S. Serenity Valley. I was surprised it wasn't taken, so I proudly christen each of my new ships the Serenity Valley after renaming the old one.

When I bought my current ship, i wasn't ready to start using it because i had to outfit the consoles, so I renamed the prior ship U.S.S. Tannhauser Gate.

And since they used to name Runabouts after rivers, my runabout is the U.S.S. River Tam. (lol)

And if I drag out my old defiant one day, you can say hello to the U.S.S. Sydney Bristow.

Starship names are not restricted to one per game, only to one per character.

So it could be a 1000 ships out there are named USS Serenity Valley or USS Enterprize.

if you want to have 2 ships with the same name you need to add a suffix of some kind: a bloody A, B, C or D...

So it could be a 1000 ships out there are named...USS Enterprize.
And there are.

I've counted at least 304 ships named EnterpriZe and various butcherings of the name, as well as countless Serenitys, Galacticas and Normandys whose captains are Kurks, Pikards, Adamas, Shepherds, etc. I admire the more obscure sci-fi and fantasy homages, but the obvious rips kinda grate on my nerves - like Starfleet has an identity crisis with some many ships and captains sharing the same name.

I would have thought they would make ship names unique to be more immersive. But I guess multiple Enterprize is better than Enterprize8675309 or Enterprize586148.

I love Olympus Mons for a ship name. Too bad I can't use it now, since I try not to copy other players' names. I'm close to getting a new ship, so I'm trying to think of a good one.

haven't played in a while, but my main ship is the uss Seleya.

the uss Vostok and uss Montlhery occasionally got used too.

I'll generally call the ship I main Nautilus on all my toons, mainly because I'm a fan of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and I've always preferred Trek ships when they were at their most "space is an ocean".

Heavy Escort Carrier - Nautilus
Patrol Escort - Dalek Saucer (I'm a Doctor Who fan and I can my the patrol escort almost look like a flying saucer)
Excelsior - Poseidon
Assault Cruiser - Hyperion
Advanced Escort - Triton
Odyssey Star Cruiser/Star Cruiser - Behemoth
Defiant - Phantom
Galaxy-X - Valkyrie

I'll be getting another ship fairly soon. I've decided it shall either be the Tranquility, or Sea of Tranquility, in honor of the Apollo 11 astronauts.

USS Akagi - Japanese aircraft carrier from the Second World War.

USS Challenger - Named for the famous sea-going ship, as well as the space shuttle orbiter.

USS Neil DeGrasse Tyson - Named for the astrophysicist/science communicator/humanist.

USS Kumari - Named for the historical line of Andorian ships to carry the name. Not original, I know, but I wanted to get some non-Earthican stuff in there.

USS Emory Erickson -
The inventor of the transporter! Got some good Trek lore in there.

USS Trinculo - The moon of Uranus, also a character from The Tempest.

USS Guangzhou - A city in China.

I just created a Vulcan science officer this month. Her ships are:

USS Sarek
USS Soval
USS T'Kumbra
USS T'Pau

May I use USS Seleya for her next ship?

For Kenny I have the tac Odyssey-class U.S.S. Yorktown.

For Stocker I have a mirror assault cruiser U.S.S. Arizona.

And For Tylor I plan on using U.S.S Soyokaze on whatever ship I put him on at T5.

For my Klingon Krenn I went with I.K.S. Fencer.
