U.S.S. SELEYA-CORKSCREWED

I looked at it this way-the Empire is hyper-aggressive, putting weapon tech ahead of other things(generally). Spock was one of the greatest computer minds in the Fed(or Empire). Enterprise established that there had been a crashed Borg scout on Earth. Plus, the Empire has expansionist leanings. The potential for a collission with the Borg at a time "earlier" than our "own" universe's timeline seems high. Combine all of that with the Empire's more ruthless approach to solutions and I came up with pet "Borg"-Borg who made the mistake of crossing Spock's path back in the "Kirk" era.

If you go back to the sequence of the Black Fleet leaving Earth orbit and re-read the description you can kind of see the set-up. With LaForge wearing Borg tech, well, hints of what may have happened....

Agreed, the Emperor's Borg was a pretty cool twist indeed.

The single most fascinating element for me remains the fact that Seleya, the hero ship of this little saga, is not even able to partake in the battle itself. Sanjay's frustration must be unbearable.

I'm very eager to see how this thread turns out. This entire story in fact.

Nice move with the Black Fleet consisting of Borg Spheres--a real ugly surprise. And to echo CeJay, it's a nice ironic twist that the hero of the story isn't even able to play a part in this fight.

Very nicely done.

The fight was going badly. Aboard the Buran, Commander Kurn struggled to target the Empire ships as the enemy fire threw the bolt after bolt at them. The first screen of Federation vessels had been destroyed and the second screen was fast disintegrating. The Buran and her sister ships were using every trick they had to keep the Empire away from the Bonestell.

“Captain,” Kurn roared, “the Bonestell has taken hits!” Pausing in his report, he launched a spread of the new quantum torpedoes at an Empire cruiser. They struck, and half of the saucer section vanished in fire. “They’re shields are down to 62%!” Another impact rocked the Buran. Onscreen, the enemy cruiser pinwheeled away, smashing into the port nacelle of another ship. It was, apparently, a Federation vessel because both ships went up in a massive detonation that signaled the activation of a hyper-sensitive self-destruct mechanism. The shock wave tossed the Buran like a fluttering leaf.

Captain Francisco “Frank” el’Sabra picked himself up off of the deck. “Damnit, we can’t take any more of this. With Nick missing no one is in charge.” He paused for a moment and the Bonestell took a stray hit, visible on the screen. “K’Ehleyr! Signal the Bonestell to jump home. Then tell whoever’s left it’s time to go!” His first officer spun towards the communication console to execute his orders. Frank shook his head. “Nick, there’s going to be hell to pay for this!” Nobody heard him over the chaos of battle.

“Captain!” Lieutenant Nog’s voice was just a bit shrill. The Seleya fled through space towards Rigel at warp 9. “I’ve been monitoring the battle at Jupiter. Something’s happening, sir!”

“Well, are you going to tell us what it is?” M’Benga’s voice held more than a trace of sarcasm. Nog flushed a pale yellow.

“Sorry, Commander. The remaining Federation signatures just…vanished.”

Sanjay hung his head in his hands. “So the Fleet is destroyed,” he said.

“No, sir. They all vanished at once, pretty much. Not like before when they were…” Nog’s voice trailed off as he realized what he had been about to say.

Sanjay’s head came up. “Then they jumped away?” For the first time since the battle had begun his voice held hope.

Mitchell stepped into the conversation. “Captain, our long range sensor logs show that peculiar energy wave that the labs reported. I’d say the survivors got away clean.”

Sanjay winced at the use of the word “survivors” but forced a smile. Tapping his combadge, he said, “Venetti, let me know the moment you think it’s safe to use Smiley’s device. We’re going home.”

Venetti replied, “Aye, sir. It looks like Mr. Perling was more right than I thought. It should only be a few more minutes.”

“Thank God,” M’Benga declared, the emotion obvious in her voice. Sanjay could only nod in agreement.

The Enterprise rocked again under the withering Borg fire. “Damage report!” Picard demanded.

“Captain, the shields are holding. These Borg aren’t adapting very well to the changes in shield frequencies.” LaForge sounded amazed.

“Maybe whatever the Empire did to bring them to heel affected their abilities. We’ll take full advantage, if that’s the case. Ensign, order the left wing to come about to 249 mark 180. Tell them to use a salvo of torpedoes simultaneously on the lead sphere and then repeat with the next. We’ll take them one at a time if we have to.” Picard turned back to LaForge. “Geordi, how are the teams at the Fracture doing?”

When LaForge opened his mouth to answer a blinding flash flooded the Bridge. As the viewscreen dampers cleared, the remains of a Borg sphere drifted past the Enterprise’s bow. “Sir, they’re nearly finished. Maybe two more minutes.”

Picard nodded and said, “Order the entire defensive globe to contract on the Federation-B contingent.” Another flash bathed the Bridge. Another sphere was reduced to its component parts. Picard pursed his lips in a grim smile. It was nearly time to leave this place.

Valeris strode into the Throne Room.

“Report.” The Emperor’s voice cracked sharply across the vast room.

“I have been monitoring the Queen-node. The attackers are proving surprisingly resilient. They seem to have armor and weapons specifically designed to counter the Black Fleet.” A hint of curiosity had crept into her voice. “Could we have a traitor informing the Federation of our strengths and weaknesses?”

Spock pondered for a moment. Then he raised one eyebrow. “Perhaps they have the Borg in their universe. It would be logical to assume the possibility.” He paused a moment and then said, “Valeris, run a simulation. Determine whether or not the Queen-node could reach through the Rip. Perhaps we can recruit some unwitting allies.” Valeris bobbed her head and left.

*******************************************

“Captain.” Picard lifted his head dully, almost apathetically.

“What is it, Number One?”

“Sir,” Data said, “The Federation ships have vanished. The only one left is the craft which fled towards Rigel.”

Picard roused himself from his slouch. “Well, if they went back through the Rip I suppose whatever was going to happen back home is over one way or the other.” He narrowed his eyes and peered at Data. “Perhaps we should pursue the straggler after all. Mr. LaForge?”

“Engines coming on line now, sir.” LaForge’s voice was calm, nearly as calm as Data’s. Picard grunted acknowledgement. Rising, he tugged at his leather jacket.

“Mr. Data,…pursue!” He brought his right hand down in a chopping motion. The I.S.S. Enterprise leaped further away from Earth and outwards towards Rigel and the Seleya. Picard thought it would be little more than a morsel but something was better than nothing.

I'm enjoying your action sequences - very well done!

So Emperor Spock plans on recruiting some "A" universe Borg? That might come back to bite him!

I think Emperor Spock is about to be reminded of an old law: The Law of Unintended Consequences. He might get his "unwilling allies", but he's not going to like their "terms" of alliance...

Looks like we're going to have a death match of Seleya v. Evil Enterprise. That is unless Seleya manages to slip away in time.

Otherwise this would be a fight I'd pay to see. (No, not with real money)

Damn!:klingon:

Sanjay called once again down to Venetti. “Do we have what we need to jump out of here?”

“Captain,” Venetti said, sounding almost arrogant, “thirty seconds and we can go home.”

“Negative,” Sanjay replied. “We’re going to Federation-B first.”

There was a brief pause and then, “Aye, Captain. Federation-B it is.”

The Enterprise moved in like a shark on Seleya. “Mr. Data-Fire everything we have at that abomination!”

Data did not waste time replying. Torpedoes and phasers fired on Seleya and…she was gone. “Sir,” said the android, “this is most peculiar. There is no wreckage but we are unable to detect the ship on our sensors.”

Picard jammed his fist down on his chair’s arm. “Damnit! Where could they have gone?”

“I am uncertain at this time, Captain. Analysis of the sensor logs may reveal more information.”

Picard calmed a bit. “Alright, Data, analyze what you have as we return to the Rip. We might as well go back and see what disaster has befallen the Empire. Perhaps our little ship can make a difference,” he added sarcastically.

*********************************************

The ships filed out as though the Fracture was still there, only activating Smiley’s Device as they hit the former location of the Fracture. To an unknowing observer, it looked as though the Fracture remained. The covering fire of Picard’s fleet masked the truth until every ship had jumped. Only then did the remaining Borg spheres realize what had happened. They broadcast their findings back to the Imperial Palace on Earth.

Valeris entered the Throne Room and stopped in front of Spock.

“Were you able to influence the Borg in the other universe?” the Emperor asked.

“I could not,” Valeris replied. “The Rip was sealed by the incursion force. We have no egress to the alternate dimensions. Somehow they departed to their home dimensions without using the Rip.”

As her words sunk in Spock visibly deflated.

“You have lost more than a battle here today. Many of our ships were in the other universe when the Rip was sealed. You were out-thought and out-maneuvered. Already the word has spread.” Valeris failed to mention that she had spread it herself. “The Fleet is in an uproar. The losses are staggering. The colonies are gone. Many have lost friends and family, apparently forever.”

The Emperor sat on his throne, unmoving, a stunned expression on his face, as though slapped. “You have failed the Empire,” Valeris said. Spock’s eyes widened slightly as the disruptor bolt scorched him from his seat. Pocketing the highly illicit Klingon weapon, Valeris signaled to a servitor to clean the Throne. After it was done she stepped up and sat down, luxuriating in the feel of the velvet cushions. “All hail Empress Valeris,” she whispered softly. The words echoed in the vast room.

Nice to see this story is still going on.

We seem to be nearing the conclusion with Sanjay getting back home and the evil empire defeated.

Valeris' power grab was a nice move. I wonder if she can hang on to it though, that seems to be the much more difficult task.

Wow! I don't think Spock saw that coming. Oh well, I never liked the beard anyway.

It does look like we're in the home-stretch, although looks can be deceiving.

You're not deceiving us, are you?

Sanjay sat in the Federation-B equivalent of McKinley Station, sipping tea. The padd in front of him held the names of those lost in the recent conflicts but he paid little attention to it. The windows showed the half-wrecked survivors, those few ships that had returned from Federation-C. The Bonestell was in a place of prominence. Her many detection dishes and antennae were being replaced by Starfleet engineers in worker bees. The lounge was raucous with the relieved laughter and conversation of the people present. They had reason to celebrate. Their universe had suffered immensely; they had fought an all-out war and barely won. Sanjay looked up as someone sat down at his table.

“Hello, Frank.”

The other captain looked at him. “I heard the verdict from the Joint Admiralty.” He was referring to the combined leaders of two Starfleets. “They say you had no choice, that it was sabotage that kept you out of the fight.” The Spaniard looked uncomfortable. “Sorry I met you with a right cross at the airlock.”

Sanjay grinned. “I expected a lot worse, in general. I can live with a bruise.”

“When are you going home?” Frank asked.

“In about three hours. As soon as Desiderata is flight-worthy.” Frank nodded.

“I’ll miss you.”

Sanjay smiled. “I’ll miss you too, Frank. Maybe I’ll get to come back soon. Who knows?”

The two men shook hands and Frank left the lounge. Sanjay picked up the padd and began memorizing names.

*******************************

Enterprise approached the Sol system and then the wreckage orbiting Jupiter. Picard clenched his fist against his leather combat armor. “Number One, take us through the Rip.” Data nodded and made a few adjustments to the navigation console. Enterprise shot past Jupiter and the scene of the recent battle and Mars came into view on the screen.

“Number One! What is the problem?” Picard’s voice was menacing.

“Sir, the Rip is no longer there. I would hypothesize that it was closed by the Federation forces.” He waited expectantly for further orders.

Picard paused for a moment. Carefully settling himself into his seat, he asked Data, “How many assets do we have left here?”

Data consulted his board a moment. “Fifteen cruisers, four light battleships, three hundred and sixty-two fighters and eighteen support ships.”

Picard stared off into space. “We are the only surviving battleship?”

“That is correct, Captain,” Data replied.

“And the remaining ships are subordinate to my command?”

“Yes, Captain.”

“Starfleet, at least in this universe, is gone. And so is that ship we were chasing. I would like you to determine how they left if the Rip was closed, Number One.” Picard’s tone brooked no refusal.

“Of course, Captain.” The android’s face revealed nothing, as usual.

As they approached Earth Picard began to smile. “I always thought Buckingham Palace was too drafty. I think Sydney would be a much nicer place for a palace. I always liked the coast.”

Data’s processors engaged for a nanosecond. “Of course, Your Majesty,” he said.

END

For now, the Seleya and her crew are done. We may see them again.(Hell, we will see them again, but right now they are done.)

Hmmm. Valeris may have something to say about Picard's choice in palace locations.

Really great story, Mistral! A great story-line all the way through. Well written and entertaining to boot, with just enough loose threads to hint at a possible reappearance of the evil Captain Picard and his faithful companion, Tonto, I mean - Data! :techman:

Sadly for Valeris-she can't reach the third universe that Evil Picard is in. By the time she does he could have his own little Empire. And as for him re-appearing, time will tell(but would YOU leave a character like that in limbo forever?) Glad you liked it. I posted it at Hopestation in its(almost) entirety for ease of reading.

I have to admit I was a bit suprised at the quick wrap-up on this story. But it is ripe for a sequel and hopefully you and Seleya will revist the evil empire(s) at some stage.

A very well executed, action-packed story you've written here and in many ways didn't quite unfold the way I had expected.

Cool stuff. When can we expect more Seleya?

I am somewhat involved in another thing and will probably continue with it until:
a.-I get sick of it
b.-I finish it
It's quite large already and still growing. See, I had this partial story that I got stumped on and set aside over a year ago. Then I started a story recently and somehow it seemed to lean towards the first piece so I combined them-and was shocked to realize I couldn't see the seams, so to speak. I wouldn't even have considered the idea but I was reading the unfinished stuff on my computer and read those two projects back to back-and it hit me. Suddenly, I was inspired and could "see" where I was going with the whole thing. So Seleya may wait a while. Thanks for reading. I had fun reading all of the comments.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a story is let it sit and marinade for a while. (I'm having to do that with two story lines at the moment. ). If you're happy with the first few chapters of your work-in-progress, why not begin posting them and continue your work on the remainder.

I hope it's not too long before we see more from Captain Sanjay and the Seleya!

Cause its not just a few chapters-I'm over 30 pages in according to WORD. I may need to go back and make major corrections, though, so I'll hold off a while longer.
