U.S.S. Enterprise - how many decks?

79, The Menagerie was a two-parter.

Should we include The Cage as well? That makes 80

Well, no. Dispite being two episodes in length, "The Menagerie" was generally considered one episode of the series, at least prior to TNG. The Star Trek Compendium lists "The Menagerie" as just episode #16. I've also seen it listed as 16a and 16b. But I can totally see the behind the scenes people in the days of ST5 thinking of TOS as being 78 episodes in length.

It would be nice to think the "78 decks" was a tip of the hat to TOS.
A shame it couldn't be worked into the story in a less ludicrous way

Actually now I think about it a bit it does make a lot of sense since TOS did have 78 episodes. Just the way it was done didn't make sense.

I usually use 79 as the numbering of TOS episodes. If Farpoint (parts 1 and 2), TBOBW (parts 1 and 2), Chain of Command (parts 1 and 2) and others are all considered two episodes, then so too should Menagerie (parts 1 and 2).

Over reliance on spell checkers- yes the word is spelled correctly but is it the right word in context?
Add in voice recognition software, I will often speak my postings, instead of typing them.

...

I would agree. In fact, I personally count it as 80 episodes, the two-parter counted separately as per TNG+ rules, and adding "The Cage." However, prior to TNG, it was traditionally counted as 78.

Hi all,

We built the entire TOS Enterprise in a game engine, and found that the 24-deck design made the most sense... We used the Franz Joseph blueprints as our initial guide, and then tweaked and fixed things to work.

We even figured out the entire Turbolift network, check this video:

That video is freaking awesome....... Very well done and lots of work went into that.

Hey that secondary bridge, did we ever see it in TOS?

Thanks!

We based our ship off of Franz Joseph's plans which had an auxiliary bridge on deck 7 in the saucer, as well as the battle bridge in the lower hull on deck 19... I don't know if either was in the show or not, I don't remember seeing them... But we tried to include as much as we could from the plans to fill out as much space as possible :)

We have the whole ship explorable, feel free to download our 50th Anniversary Beta if you like:

Here's a mission we have where you get to pilot the Enterprise in and out of spacedock at different planets:

OK am going to download this..

Very impressive! Have you really modelled the entire ship, entire saucer and all?

Was there ever any on screen reference or diagram which would have indicated the number of decks on original Enterprise or the refit (apart that stupid turbolift.) I am a bit sceptical that 24 decks would actually fit to the ships in their commonly accepted sizes.

You'd need to make the decks a fair bit shorter than depicted on the show - 7' high ceilings or thereabouts.

However, since the length of the ship was never determined either, the best option would be to make it bigger! Based on the depicted of the flight deck, 1,250' long is in the ballpark.

I know. But then again we have exterior shots with the travel pod and people walking on the saucer from TMP, so that kinda establishes the rough ballpark for the size. There is absolutely no reason to attempt to shove 24 decks on the thing if that's just some background information and not actual canon. I heard that Jefferies originally designed the ship with twenty decks, eight of them on the saucer, and that seems quite reasonable to me. Then again, on either ship the windows on the saucer rim do not even remotely work. The ships should be much larger for the two window rows to reasonably represent two different decks.*

(*This thing bugs me unreasonably much, but I seem to be pretty alone in this. I recently did a google search on the topic, and all I found was an years old thread I had started to complain about the issue...)

The onscreen evidence is very vague about he size of the ship - even TMP has some "fudge space" with regard to the travel pods and airlocks.
Myself, I tend to see the refit as smaller and leaner than the original Enterprise, not bigger. either way, FJ's 24 decks is larger than I would see as possible for anything but a gargantuan Enterprise, but then again FJ was depicting the USS Constitution, so where is the discrepancy?

Trust me, you are not the only one this bugs. Actual objections to it tend to appear only in the odd post on a thread about something else however.
Which is is to me equally surprising, as according to the official ship lengths some of those windows would be virtually on the floor.
These days, I just refuse to believe that those lights on the saucer rim are windows, per se. More likely they are sensor ports - gaps in the the hull where sensing equipment can peer through and relay their data to the Bridge. In many ways, the six "window" groups on the refit-E are a precursor of the rim-length sensor strip we see on the E-D.[/QUOTE]
