For the longest time TWoK has been hailed as generally the most favoured of Trek movies. And now that the buzz is calming down let's have a show of hands, so to speak.

Which do you prefer: The Wrath Of Khan or Star Trek (2009 version)?

TWoK is far from my favourite film, but I'll take it easily over ST09. For all its flaws TWoK still has a certain overall feel and sensibility to it. ST09 just made me cringe and cringe and cringe...

I like them both equally as my favorite Trek films....

I just don't like those TWOK uniforms....

I could have sworn somebody had posted one of these just in the past week or two, but I can't find it now. Oh, well. Anyway, since I really dislike TWOK and rather like STXI, clearly for me STXI wins. Neither is a great movie - none of the Trek movies are, IMO - but I enjoyed the newer one much more, so it wins for me.

It's far too soon for me to make a decision. TWOK has been around for a long time and stands up even 27 years later. I know the film and where the franchise goes as a result of it. ST'09 is still a new film. I've only seen it twice in the theater. I haven't watched it over and over again. I don't know what context ST'09 will be viewed in five or ten years from now.

That's pretty much where I stand as well. With IV close behind there. I don't try to say which one is better or not, since they all have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I really didn't want to think this way because I feel it comes across as snobby, but halfway through "Star Trek", I couldn't help but think to myself: "as good as this is and as much of an improvement as it is over them in many ways (i.e. special effects, epic feeling, casting), it's still nothing compared to the best of the old Star Trek movies". I was thinking especially of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek: First Contact".

The new one kills "The Wrath of Khan" as far as special effects go, but both Star II and VIII are a million times more tightly written than "Star Trek" and Star Trek movies need a good plot above all else to succeed. The characters are always great, that's a given (although the last two TNG movies even dropped the ball with those), but when the plot is bad, it doesn't matter how good the characters are, the movie's going to suffer. This is more evident in "Star Trek" than almost any of the other movies. I think that's why I realized it couldn't hold a candle to the classics right around the time Nimoy mind-melded with Pine to explain the ridiculous plot. That was a jump the shark moment if I ever saw one.

Khan.

Easy pickings there. It drew on great literature to drive it.

Trek 09 drew on...er....fun comic books, maybe?

Agreed completely. I couldn't put it any better than this, so I won't try. :bolian:

The screenplay of TWoK with the budget and scope of Trek XI, directed by Nicholas Meyer.

...what, we don't get to mix and match? :(

I very much agree. ST11 is good if you just want to switch your mind off and look at some pretty FX (until you start noticing lens flares at least), but it just doesn't compare in terms of plot.

The Wrath of Khan is easily one of my favorite films ever, not just in Star Trek.

Oddly, some people will use that in defence of Star Trek XI which I find completely mental.

Anyway, my vote goes to Star Trek II because it's actually better.
