Two episodes to be delayed in the U.S. due to Memorial Day

Yes, I knew that. My point was that Space are forced to delay episodes 6 and 7 because America feels the need to have a break.

And Space have confirmed that The Almost People won't be on next week since their schedule shows a movie is on instead....

For whatever reason, Space is joined at the hip to BBC America, so they can't show it without BBCA showing it.

Which is stupid to the extreme because a) we're not America and b) BBCA isn't even available in Canada, so what's the point?

I'm rather surprised with myself at how pissed I am about this. I mean, we had to put up with 6 month delays in the past - during Season 2 the CBC delayed things so much, including inserting its own mid-season hiatus, that the DVD box set hit stores the week before Doomsday aired. And last season we had to make do with a week or so's delay. But I just thought this year would be different. And making matters worse is it's going to be impossible to avoid spoilers, I think. Already there's that thread about "shocking twist" in The Almost People. OK, I can avoid that easily enough, but - to use an example - within hours of The Doctor's Wife airing there were posts to YouTube (where I have Doctor Who videos "bookmarked") and news forums and newspaper headlines and other places giving the game away about Idris. I realized that had I not seen the episode on the Saturday, I would have been unable to avoid spoilers if I'd tried. I empathize with my friends in Australia and New Zealand (I hear the ratings in NZ aren't terrific - maybe it's because everyone down there obtains the episodes "through alternate means" rather than wait a month?).

Whatever happens in The Almost People - and definitely Moffat's promised "game-changer" at the end of episode 7 - is going to be impossible to contain. Which puts US and Canadian fans at a clear disadvantage. Unless we avoid sites like TrekBBS and the Doctor Who News Page and Gallifrey Base until June 11, and avoid UK newspapers, or pop-culture websites that run reviews and could put out a headline like "Amy's death scene gripping"* without thinking, if we want to avoid spoilers, we're being forced to seek out alternate methods.

I mentioned this elsewhere - I don't want it to be so bad that BBCA and Space drop the show or anything, but part of me does hope the ratings for delayed episodes 6 and 7 take a noticeable hit on those two channels so they'll smarten up and seek alternatives next time around. Columbus Day weekend, which I believe is a holiday in the US, hits Oct. 10, which stands a good chance of being midway through the broadcasts of the second half. So we'll likely be having this dance again in about 5 months. :(

* I made that one up - no flaming please! ;)

^^Actually, I doubt we'll have much of a problem with the second half of the season. My understanding is that it's airing in September and October. The only holiday in that timeframe is the Canadian Thanksgiving. That won't impact BBCA's airing of the episodes. Space will have a marathon on that weekend, but they'll likely take a break from it to show Doctor Who. They took a break from their Star Trek movie marathon this past weekend to show Rebel Flesh, and last Thanksgiving they took a break from their Merlin marathon to show a rerun from Doctor Who S5.

This move makes no sense. I guess I will be watching it online for the next couple of weeks.

Sure it makes sense, Memorial Day Weekend, people aren't going to be just sitting around at home, they're going to be having Family outings, Big BBQs, going to parks, etc. No one runs their regular programs during the Memorial Weekend, that why there are so many marathons on, such as SyFy's Twilight Zone, BBCA's Dr Who, etc. They figure you can just ahve the channel on, going through the marathon, and your gatherings can catch an episode here and there while the aprty commences.
We are talking about Whovians here, not normal people. And memorial day is on Monday anyhow.

Yes, but, Memorial Day is a weekend long event, many folks may be travelling to see a dead relative at a distant out of town cemetary, and then hang out at Grandma's (Who lives right near the out of town cemetary) for the weekend festivities.

Every large extended family has Military, and Memorial Day is a long weekend to honor your fallen Soldiers (Or other fallen Military)

While Space was showing VGR earlier, they ran a DW promo that said "new episode Saturday" and I hoped that maybe good sense had prevailed and they were showing the new ep after all (even though I kinda figured they probably just ran their standard promo in error). I tweeted them about it, and sure enough they replied, "Nope, sorry. Still taking the one week break." Oh well.

What, you don't know how to record something?

Mr Awe

I'm not that upset about this, in the grand scheme of things. I'll just wait a week and watch it when it's on--or after it's on and I get time.

Sure I do, I record on VHS every week, then transfer to DVD. We're not talking about you or I though, we're talking about the other 998 out of 1000. Plus, recording isn't as desirable for ratings, because you can skip the commercials. I don't matter anyway, I've never rec'd a Neilsen Rating Request.

I too saw a commercial saying new episode of Doctor Who this Saturday on Space, despite in the previous commercial break they had a commercial saying the movie I, Robot would be on Saturday in Doctor Who's slot.

I, Robot is indeed on Saturday. Space is just being really sloppy showing Doctor Who commercials this week. Ironically, I don't remember seeing any last week.

You will be when you discover it's impossible to avoid spoilers, especially after this week's episode, which I chose to watch via other methods. Within a couple hours of the episode ending in the UK many of the websites I frequent had photos up for the next episode, DWM issued its super-huge spoiler cover for the next issue.

I will be very curious to find out if anyone who didn't boycott sites like this one manages to make it to next Saturday without having certain major details spoiled.

Does BBC America show DW:Confidential?

Not to my knowledge, though some PBS stations air it when they show past seasons. Of course it'll be on the DVD/Blu-ray later but it'll be the "cutdown" version because, at 45 minutes per installment, they'd have to double the number of discs in the set (not to mention all the licensing issues).
