TWD Dead City

but they could have done more...spliced in old footage to save a couple of bucks
Then they would have had to go through the hassle of securing permission of any actors in those scenes for using their likeness in the show. You'll note when we do see flashbacks in Dead City to Negan beating Glenn to death, the clips are carefully edited so we only see Negan and Maggie (who are this show's leads and therefore don't need to be sought out for permission) and Glenn himself (clearly they did acquire Steven Yeun's permission) and no one else.

Not certain its a hassle, as part of a production's operation deals with this matter. That, and in TWD's series finale, clips of several major characters (alive or dead) from the series' history were seen in the montages, so I'm not so sure only focusing on Maggie, Glenn and Negan was legal concern, but more of one focusing on the players essential to Maggie's PTSD.

Binged it...

Wow. Compared to the dreck imo that was the last days of TW and FTWD so far, this was fricken brilliant. I haven't been this engaged in TWD since before they gave Rick the boot. Moving to the city really injects freshness into everything, and the writing was way better than it has been IMO.

I give season one an 8. I look forward to next season.

Now I am wondering if Daryl Dixon will be as good...

With Daryl, it looks like they will spend a lot of time on sweeping outdoor scenes with no people around, just beautiful but deserted landscapes.

I am not expecting much, to be honest.

Well if I were in France/Europe, I'd find a well maintained castle to hold out in, hopefully with access to water and somewhere to grow crops.

Depends on the budget. The real reason that the Walking Dead stopped being in bigger cityscape areas and we got stuff like the Farm for Season 2 was because AMC slashed the budget and extended the episodes.

Dead City was filmed in New Jersey, IIRC, because filming in NYC is mighty expensive. But at least it's not just Georgia Forests anymore.

Just finished it. I give it an 8 out of 10. Phenomenal. Great acting by the leads. Love the quick pace. Loved the marshal. The best season of the franchise in a few years IMO. My biggest complaint is how fast they got rid of the Tribespeople.

I suspect six episodes is becoming the new standard for seasons in the Walking Dead franchise. Even Fear, in its finale season is split between two blocks of six episodes each.

I did like Negan better than Maggie. Maggie needs to forgive Negan for her own good and her son's.

In Dead City's season one finale, Maggie promised Hershel she would bring an end to her Negan obsession (for the sake of her relationship with her son). We can guess Maggie will commit a number of self-destructive acts (upcoming second season) before she's truly ready to place Negan in the rear view mirror of her life.

Well, when she finds out what happened to Herschel, that'll throw everything into whack.... and make her feel so guilty of the price of her obsession that she will work to free Negan.

However, this show makes me think that Scott Gimple has been regulated to a token position... he is supposed to be Chief Creative Officer of TWD, but it feels like Geoff Johns position in the DCFU -- where he had the title but was ignored where it counted.

So in this case Dead City basically dumped was was set up at the end of Walking Dead . They conveniently erased Negan's wife and child (not even a real viewing of them in a single scene), as well as the detente Maggie had with Negan.

This and Daryl & Carol show are basically milking what they can of TWD with popular characters whose actors unfortunately can't really get more acting work (i.e. Cohan's failed series, Norman Reedus only being able to do Ride... etc)

I was under the impression this was just supposed to be a season, and not dragged out to Infinity and Beyond

Everyone is teasing Negan will be evil again. Don't believe it. Otherwise, they wasted all the wonderful character development of the character the last couple of seasons on the main show.

It probably would have been cliche, but I would've enjoyed it if they'd done more with the "Walker King" that Maggie encountered in the sewers. Like there being a new subplot that the byproduct of the Croat's "Use parts of Walkers for Fuel" process was causing the residue of the Walkers to all start to merge together under the city into a massive Walker Monster that was eventually going to erupt to the surface.

But that's too...video game. I think.

Interesting trailer, but that last shot--lights powering up all over the city--hopefully will mean something for a future, rather than yet another enemy outpost / territory falling to war and/or Walkers.
