KIRK: It's possible. Whales have been on Earth far earlier than man.

Spock: Ten million years earlier. The Humpbacks were heavily hunted by man. They have been extinct since the 21st century. It is possible that an alien intelligence sent the probe to find out why they lost contact.

 

[Ziz]

Kirk: Could the humpback's answer to this call be simulated?

 

[DeVario]

SPOCK: Sounds, but not the language. We would be responding in gibberish.

Kirk: Does the species exist on any other planet?

 

[DeVario]

SPOCK: Negative. Humpbacks were indigeonous to Earth. Earth of the past.

 

[Leandar]

Kirk: Well, we have no choice. We must destroy the probe before it destroys Earth.

 

[LeadHead]

Spock: To attempt to do so would be futile Admiral. The probe could render us neutral easily.

 

[DeVario]

KIRK: Well we can't just turn away. There must be an alternative.

 

[LeadHead]

Spock: There is another possibility but of course I canot guaruntee success. We could attempt to find some Humpback Whales.

 

[DeVario]

McCOY: You just said there aren't any, except on Earth of the past.

 

[Brian]

SPOCK: Yes, Doctor. That is exactly what I said.

 

[Leandar]
