It's finishing out the seasons for shows that haven't been entirely released yet (Newhart) that drive me to madness.

It's finishing out the seasons for shows that haven't been entirely released yet (Newhart) that drive me to madness.
But usually for more. There are exceptions, but box sets of previously released seasons, movies, etc. are usually cheaper unless there's some value-added exclusive or the films have been remastered or something.
In the case of what the OP is complaining about, I have no problem with it because it allows people to get caught up. And as someone who has a growing list of shows he only watches on DVD, I'm not willing to wait 2-3-4 years for a full-series set to show up.

And Law & Order (all varieties). They went through three or four styles of packaging before they decided on the one used now (a larger box with individual slipcases inside). I'd like to think that if any L&O show makes it to Blu-Ray, they will have dropped that stupid shit...
I have "The X-Files: The Collector's Edition Box Set" and it's awesome. That is all.
What's wrong with Boston Legal? All the boxes look pretty much the same.
Wasn't season 5 a keepcase with overlapping discs when compared to the previous sets that were in a "more tradition" vein of TV box sets?
God Damn! I don't own season 5, the only on I don't. Yeah that's bullshit.
What I REALLY hate is the West Wing sets, half are double sided and the other half of the series is usable single sided.

The Boston Legal sets are a little different from each other (season one has a picture of Alan at the bottom, season five mantains the same style on the slipcase, but is actually in a much smaller case than previous seasons), but they're pretty close.

Law & Order is one of the few shows where I've just given up on any packaging continuity. The releases are so sparse, I'll just take whatever Jack McCoy I can get!
But there are other instances where this really bugs me, like 24, Bones, Primeval and MacGyver. (Why is the 1st season twice as thick as the others?!) Alias used to be a terrible offender in this category but the recent rerelease fixed that. I'm hoping for new rereleases to help with 24 & Bones. 20th Century Fox shows like Dark Angel, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, & Angel have been released in 3 different packaging types but the entire runs of all the series have been released in all 3 types. The packaging shift for Cheers & Taxi is very annoying, which is why I'm glad CBS/Paramount was able to put out all 11 seasons of Frasier before they switched formats. Not to mention releasing entire series of Star Trek in a single year before they got the chance to change their minds. (Although, the packaging for the Star Trek DVDs is still way more complicated & creative than it needs to be.)
The Cheers one drove me absolutely bonkers. I'm entirely too OCD.
Because season one's slipcases have only one disk, while the rest have two. Actually, that is one of the minor complaints, but the rest of your points are well taken. And I agree with you on Fraiser. I was glad they finished that before the format change. I just wish Cheers and Wings had too.
And what's with the ugly plain gray disks Paramount puts out now? They can't afford artwork anymore? Another admittedly minor complaint, but still....
Likewise, I'm currently loving the Battlestar Complete Blu Ray boxset.
I'll sign up for the box art/format continuity hate though. The House sets over here are ever so slightly different, which irks me.....
That I don't mind, a little different is fine, it's not like the title on the boxes line up perfectly anyways. The last season would be smaller, it only has 13 episodes.
What drives me nuts about breaking "box contnuity" is mostly in the way I store the boxes on my shelves. I've a lot of these series boxes and very limited spaces to store them on so I store the boxes laying down with the narrowest end facing out. This means that in the case of Boston Legal, Cheers, Season 2 of Frasier (ALL OF THE OTHER SEASONS ARE THE SAME EXCEPT THAT ONE SEASON?!) which are clear cases inside a slip-cover have the title only on the cover, but not on the the top of the "box" meaning only the clear, blank, case facing out. Meaning to title these cases I had to write on them with a Sharpie which just looks... UGH!

You get a different box style in Region 2, don't you? From what I hear, the R1 version of that box is a major pain in the ass.
Nothing is as a pain in the ass to open as Star Trek: TAS. Cool box, but completely impractical.
