Tuvok was a Vulcan loser

john titor

Captain
He was around for 100 years and the best he could do was lieutenant commander, irc? Also he was defeated by the cretin Neelix with a riddle about surviving without water or something like that so he clearly was a stupid vulcan. The only thing he seemingly was good at was martial arts so I'll give him that. He may not have been as career focused and so I don't think he was a complete loser, but for a Vulcan he may count as one.

He left Starfleet for a long time because he found it uncomfortable to be working with irrational humans, but having a family tempered his patience and he had his commission reinstated. That's why he was only a Lieutenant when Voyager began.

I'd tell you to watch Flashback to understand the back-story, but I don't want to inflict that episode upon anybody.

^That was the ONLY episode of VOY I've tried to watch multiple times and just can't bring myself to get all the way through it. I'm with TGB, it sucked. At least with most bad VOY, there's stuff to laugh/snicker at. Not in that one.

It was an 80-year hiatus, as I recall. And I don't understand the logic of one stupid neelix moment "proving" that Tuvok is stupid. :vulcan:

I just finished watching Flashback.
The look/feel of it was fine, it was cool to see Sulu battling the Klingons in a different place that STVI took place... it was just so hard to believe that it all was going on in Tuvok's mind. And then Janeway had to steal Yeoman Rand's uniform? "Written by Brannon Braga", it says, during the credits. Surprise, surprise. :D It could have been a whole lot better... and tangible. Not just a highly detailed memory virus mind meld.

Paramount: We just sank considerable budgets into sets of the Excelsior and hired George Takei. What have you written for us?
Braga: One of those highly detailed memory virus mind meld stories.
Paramount. Great. Those go over really well.

Anyway, I wonder just what passes for a "loser" in Vulcan society. It's probably the most emotional Vulcan is the biggest loser. Like Sybok.

I never thought he was a loser - I just thought he was the Vulcan equivalent of an asshole. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. :)

lol Pretty much what I thought

I reckon he would have been just a run-of-the-mill Vulcan that probably slightly over-achieved.

I don't see Tuvok as a loser. I see him as someone who stands up for what he believes in.

He was unhappy with his first Starfleet career and decided to leave. Later on, he decided to go back to Starfleet. Nothing wrong in that.

As a character, I find Tuvok a very convincing Vulcan. A bit rigid sometimes but still with a knowledge and understanding for humans and other species.

Seriously? Worse than Paris-Turns-Into-A-Lizard-and-has-Janeway's-babies?

Er I mean Threshold?

^ Er...isn't it Janeway-Turns-Into-A-Lizard-and-has-Paris'-babies ? ;)

I don't think Tuvok's a loser. As I recall, he spent a good number of a years outside Starfleet as a teacher. Also, his mental instability portrayed in some episodes has usually been the result of mind-melds with characters with unstable minds.

^ I always thought that was a fairly well regarded episode.

I'm not fond of 'Flashback' myself.

Sure, it was cool to see Takei again, but that mishap with Valtane's 'death' and the overall 'feel' of the episode was wrong...

Simple theory, simple solution...

I hate Neelix. Neelix is my enemy.

Tuvok hates Neelix.

The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend.

Therefore, the Enemy of Neelix is my Friend.

Tuvok is the Enemy of Neelix.

Tuvok is my Friend.

QED.

(And a very mature "shut up" goes out to people who are about to post "Bu...bu...but Tuvok isn't Neelix's enemy!)

Let's hope there are no teachers reading - you'll make them cry! :rommie:

And surely it depends what he was a teacher of? He could have been teaching people to be cool, just like the fonz.

"Jeramiah was a bullfrog" = "Tuvok Was a Vulcan Loser"

Sing it to yourself. The syllables work perfectly!
