Tuvok was a Vulcan loser

He was around for 100 years and the best he could do was lieutenant commander, irc? Also he was defeated by the cretin Neelix with a riddle about surviving without water or something like that so he clearly was a stupid vulcan. The only thing he seemingly was good at was martial arts so I'll give him that. He may not have been as career focused and so I don't think he was a complete loser, but for a Vulcan he may count as one.

He left Starfleet for a long time because he found it uncomfortable to be working with irrational humans, but having a family tempered his patience and he had his commission reinstated. That's why he was only a Lieutenant when Voyager began.

I'd tell you to watch Flashback to understand the back-story, but I don't want to inflict that episode upon anybody.

The look/feel of it was fine, it was cool to see Sulu battling the Klingons in a different place that STVI took place... it was just so hard to believe that it all was going on in Tuvok's mind. And then Janeway had to steal Yeoman Rand's uniform? "Written by Brannon Braga", it says, during the credits. Surprise, surprise. It could have been a whole lot better... and tangible. Not just a highly detailed memory virus mind meld.

Paramount. Great. Those go over really well.

Anyway, I wonder just what passes for a "loser" in Vulcan society. It's probably the most emotional Vulcan is the biggest loser. Like Sybok.

I reckon he would have been just a run-of-the-mill Vulcan that probably slightly over-achieved.

I don't see Tuvok as a loser. I see him as someone who stands up for what he believes in.

He was unhappy with his first Starfleet career and decided to leave. Later on, he decided to go back to Starfleet. Nothing wrong in that.

As a character, I find Tuvok a very convincing Vulcan. A bit rigid sometimes but still with a knowledge and understanding for humans and other species.

I don't think Tuvok's a loser. As I recall, he spent a good number of a years outside Starfleet as a teacher. Also, his mental instability portrayed in some episodes has usually been the result of mind-melds with characters with unstable minds.

Sure, it was cool to see Takei again, but that mishap with Valtane's 'death' and the overall 'feel' of the episode was wrong...
