TUC: Overrated?

I wonder if the board and pointer was a nod to the President being blind(or was supposed to be)? Either to make it easier for him to perceive, or more difficult?

I think it works better to have a Klingon try and kill the Federation president, otherwise it looks like a Starfleet only conspiracy:

1. Federation starship crew kills Gorkon
2. Federation starship (which also haappens to be have on board freed criminals that killed Gorkon who were obtained by illegally entering Klingon space) helps destroy Klingon starship that was "protecting" conference
3. Federation officer is there to assasinate delegates

Plenty of plausible deniability from the Klingons that they were ever part of the conspiracy if West is the assasin.

^^
Which works just fine for them, so they can claim that they continued the war not out a desire, but to satisfy vengeance. Also, that they are behaving honorably, while the Federation is dishonorable, allowing greater justification on the home front, to make sure that the rest of the Empire supports the continued war.

For those who aren't familiar with the cut scenes

After Kirk and McCoy are sentenced to the penal (hee hee) colony Admiral Cartwright is with the Federation President and they call it a damn show trial. With Cartwright is a guy called Colonel West which is Rene howeverthehellhislastname is spelled and maybe the Romulan Ambassador.

West breaks out a bunch of charts and says they can send in Federation Navy SEALS (or whatever they use) to break Kirk and McCoy out. The Fed President (Who I still find amusing it's the dad from that 70's show and Boddicker from Robocop) says what if this leads to war to which West gives this cheesy reply "In that case we would clean their chronometers". But the pres nixes it.

After Scotty kills the Klingon and he's lying on the floor I think Worf says "This is not Klingon blood" about the red blood running from the back of his head and in "Scooby Doo" fashion they pull off the mask to reveal Colonel West.

Don't know if I like it better with or without that sequence.

That explains that line cut out of the script where West is dying and mutters "would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling geysers!"

Actually, the scenes really help tie the whole (conspiracy) plot together, I think they're good to leave in, but.... This must have been pointed out many times, but West's "secret plan" is out on display at the dinner later in the POTUFOP's office.

I what way would it ever be a good thing to let the Romulan see that? And even the other guests, I doubt they all would have access to a secret plan. Maybe they were passing it off as abstract art.

He spewed that line. P.S. It's "geezer". ;)

Thank you, Maurice. I knew I didn't spell it right but was in too much of a hurry to fix it. My apologies.

Actually, meddling geysers is funnier, except we're not in Yellowstone.

TUC always felt to me like it's trying too hard to be "epic",where in my opinion it comes across kind of cheesy. I'm not certain as to why, but it has something to do this the aesthetics and vibe the movie exudes. By contrast, TWOK had a much more sophisticated tone to it. It came across with the right balance of heart, edginess, good humor, classy spirit... if that makes sense. I watched both movies again recently, and my reactions to each were the same. You just can't beat TWOK.

For me, this one is a mixed bag of good things and banality.

The Good: The camaraderie between the big three, the sets, the make up and score.

The Bad: It's dull. It gets by on a sort of 'This is the last one so be nice to us for old times sake' mentality. It expects us to overlook the misplaced and basic detective plot and give them a pass just for being on screen again.

I wanted to like it more than I do - I really did - but this one just doesn't do it for me. It lacks spark. I guess I expected something bigger and more engaging for a farewell.

How do you feel about it?
I haven't seen TUC in a decade. I didn't like some of the humor. There was too much jokiness and cuteness. Klingons quoting Shakespeare was just too much. I'd say some of the cast was long due for retirement. I wasn't crazy about the music.
