Trivial Stuff They Don't Have On the Destiny Which Would Be A Problem

They've brought up a few things since the beginning of "Universe" that have caused a chuckle, but I'd like to list off the everyday items that we take for granted, that would cause a visible problem for the new crew of the Destiny in time. Bonus points if you come up with something that likely will not be addressed by the show's producers, and have to be chalked up to artistic license or suspending your state of disbelief.

I'll start:

- Deodorant, perfume, aftershave: They have the showers, but nevertheless the crew will not smell that great after a couple hours' work. I'm not sure if the showers we've seen have conditioner for those with unmanageable hair, or hairdryers for that matter.

- Makeup and hair product: our prettier cast members should not look so pretty without foundation, eyeliner, lipstick, etc. It's not like they NEED it, but for the sake of "good television" they probably will continue to use a truckload of the stuff... c.f. the first season of "Scrubs", where Eliott didn't wear more than basic TV makeup. They let her wear more in the second season onwards and it showed.

- Hair dye: Again mostly for the ladies, but I highly doubt the more mature crew members like Camille Wray is still wearing her natural color. I similarly doubt they'll address it in the show.

- Basic painkillers: lack of medication has already been brought up, but what about the standard like Tylenol or Advil?

- Sewing tools: We know they came through with little else besides the clothes on their back. That's an issue in itself, but what happens when those clothes are damaged or start to wear out? Will they address a lack of socks at some point?

- Regular chiropractic or osteopathic treatment: I know plenty of people at the age of the crew we've seen on Destiny so far that prefer, or need, regular rearrangement of their bone structure to stay comfortable. Aside from generic soldiers and scientists, we've seen exactly one cook, and I'm not sure if TJ is someone who knows about sports medicine. OTOH, she is a military medic.

- Salt, cooking oils, spices: They seem to be eating some sort of military mush right now, but eventually they'll find a source of meat, grains, etc. on some planet. That's great, but will they prepare it beyond roasting it with Greer's barbecue unit? And what about keeping it on-board? It's not like we've seen a galley and fridge.

I'll stop there, but I'm curious to see what you guys can come up with. What run-of-the-mill stuff should they NOT have, that should eventually make life less comfortable for them?

-Soap. So they have those funky showers, but water is only half of what you clean yourself with.
-Razors. The guys seem to have no problem preventing their beards from growing at the moment. Are razor blades something military officers carry for emergency situations? For that matter, are the ladies shaving their legs?
-Condoms. Though this would only be a problem for Lt. Scott.

Meanwhile, I'd like to sake a moment to discuss things they have that seem odd:
-In Air I noticed they had spare uniforms and field gear for Eli and the other civilians that went to the desert planet. During a hurried evacuation, would such things really be a necessity to grab?
-Dr. Rush brought a book with him. Should we assume this was in the same case as the Ancient communication stones?
-Chloe has her Ipod with her. When Icarus base was attacked she was having dinner with everyone else. Somehow, an important dinner like that doesn't seem in appropriate place to bring your Ipod. But then,I don't even own an Ipod, so what do I know?

Before they segregated us by gender in 6th Grade health class we simply called it by the brand name Kotex. I had no ideal what they were used for.

Military would indeed carry a shaving kit (single barber-style blade with brush to make foam). But they would indeed need soap. They likely a small quantity but would require to make some ongoing. But they did that in Gilligand's island already so that's not a fresh idea.

Something that they likely not have of definetly not have in sufficient quantity is toilet paper! And since everything is computerize they don't have much to recycle so once Rush's book is done, the destiny will need to stop at a forest planet to pickup leaves.

Feminine hygiene products were my first thought.

I'm not sure why...

Medecine wise I wonder if any are afflicted by some form of treated sickness like asthma or diabetes that would have bad consequence if untreated?

You were thinking of Mrs. Digit's well-being?

That and toilet paper were the first things in my mind. No one ever packs tp.

Sure.

Let's go with that.

I'd hope that if the Ancients could invent the stargates, they could slip a little anti-persperant into their magic scrubbing mist. Unless they didn't have any kind of cultural objections to B.O., in which case, hell, they might amplify it to give the user a strong Ancient musk. Well, when in Atlantis...

-Condoms. Though this would only be a problem for Lt. Scott.

Bet you that vasectomy is years old by know. Those little swimmers aren't going anywhere. Though that won't keep the young and virile population of the Destiny from eventually going blind and crazy...

-Dr. Rush brought a book with him. Should we assume this was in the same case as the Ancient communication stones?

That, or he might've had it in one of his pockets. Rush isn't exactly sociable, and he's probably a bit of a workaholic, so it'd make sense if he was one of us folks who makes sure always to have a book on him.

Now, the iPod base station he was listening to, that was a bit over the top.

-Chloe has her Ipod with her. When Icarus base was attacked she was having dinner with everyone else. Somehow, an important dinner like that doesn't seem in appropriate place to bring your Ipod. But then,I don't even own an Ipod, so what do I know?

iPods are small and light enough that if you're so inclined, you can just keep it on you all the time in case you want it at some point (as a co-example, I'm sure Senator Armstrong had his wallet on him, even though he probably wasn't going to need to pay for anything or show his driver's license at Icarus). Add to the fact that she probably hadn't had time to unpack yet, and it makes sense she'd carry it through.

These people are going to need entertainment of some kind. Who wants to guess how long it will be until they find a holodeck or something? I mean, their journey is going to take a very long time, assuming they can ever get the ship turned around, and people are going to start going a bit nuts for want of something to do.

Re: Trivial Stuff They Don't Have On the Destiny Which Would Be A Prob

One odd thing I found in 'Water' was that Chloe was listening with headphones. So am I to assume that

1. In the evacuation she had her mp3 player (or whatever with her).
2. She has enough power to listen / Has a way to recharge it?

Because that seems pretty odd to me.

I take it you missed the scene with the recharging plate then. All battery powered stuff they brought with them can now be recharged thanks to that magic piece of tech.

Nobody's mentioned toilet paper yet?

It was one of the first things. However when I go back to the Philippines that is one of the things I go without. Generally only the rich and the tourist hotels use TP. You can go to the markets and see the small size of the rolls compared to the American product. They believe there way is cleaner then wiping with a small sheet of paper and wonder why we don't wash properlly afterwards.

Those people are freaks.

What is 'their way'?

I haven't used much TP since those flushable wipes came out for toddlers (they're not just for toddlers anymore). I can't imagine going back.

So, people in the Philipines wash after every trip to the restroom?

When there that's what I do. most also wipe their hands with rubbing alcohol after wards if they can afford it.

Re: Trivial Stuff They Don't Have On the Destiny Which Would Be A Prob

Wow. That was ... informative.

Re: Trivial Stuff They Don't Have On the Destiny Which Would Be A Prob

So then, are we going to assume Ancient toilets can cleanse one's ass, therefore helping them deal with the lack of toilet paper?
