TrekLit politics

I had been iffy about putting de Gaulle forward as a person to have a ship named after, but I rather like him, and he was incredibly influential.

He deserves it at least as much as Churchill.

I prefer the ships named after people in Trek history and would like the familiar names to be kept to a minimum.

I like seeing those, too.

Hm. What ships might we see named after the Founders of the Federation? Prominent Federation leaders?

I'm actually the other way around--although we canonically have the USS Gorkon, which I appreciated, I would find a lot of that to be too close to in-joke territory for my tastes.

By contrast, a mix of references to different cultures from Earth's history really appeals to me in starship names (and a few more from Canadian history wouldn't hurt ;)).

This board needs a "snore" smiley... :p

And finally and possibly the two most deserving of my little list: USS Winston Churchill and USS Charles De Gaulle
I could have sworn I remembered there being a USS Churchill somewhere.

Just checked MB and I was right, there have been two, a Baton-Rouge class in the TOS comic "All Those Years Ago", and a Steamrunner class in the video game Armada II. I must have been thinking of the former, because I've never played Armada II.

Personally, I think it would be appropriate were a (possibly) left-leaning star fleet of a united Earth named all their ships for either scientists or historic political martyrs.

Okay, I usually name my starships after Northwest place names (Puyallup, Duwamish, etcetera), but just for fun:

U.S.S. Scopes.

U.S.S. Woodhull

And, just to be puckish, how about the U.S.S. Rasputin?

You can phaser it, torpedo it, ram it, infect it with a computer virus, lure it towards a black hole, lead it into the Badlands, but the beast just won't die...

Also, its captain has an odd obsession with the IKS Anastasia, musing about how "she'll be mine!"

And the captain is played by Tom Baker . . . .
