TrekBBS vs. the Music

Ah, your selection is definitely versatile (musically and linguistically), but I love it! So, here were have French, American and German artists (and how great that you picked the languages I speak so I can understand them).

1. Zaz - Je Veux
I've never heard of this artist before, but I really like them/her. (I thought it was a band but the Last.fm search shows it's an alias of a singer.) It's a little bit jazzy, a bit chanson-like, and very catchy. The lyrics are very simple, but I like what she's saying (i.e. singing).

2. Ruth Etting - Shine on Harvest Moon

Oh, I love me some oldies. I've never listened to this lady, but she has a lovely voice. So this is from Ziegfried Follies? I've never been into musicals (unless we're talking the Buffy musical episode or Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd), but I like the music. (I guess it's just dancing that bores me.)

3. Angelika Express - Copyright Killer
I've never heard of this band before, either, but this is excellent. What a great baseline. When they started singing I expected it to be more of an industrial track, since that's what I'm used to with German bands, but it sounds like simply a great rock tune. The vocals are just OK, but the rest is really good.

1. Zaz - Je Veux

I heard this song on a culture tv program and immediately liked it. Her voice is unusual, yet appealing. Apparently, she just made it big in France or so the program claimed.

The lyrics are very simple, but I like what she's saying (i.e. singing).

They're so simple even I can understand them. I learned French at school but it's very rusty by now and I was never very good at understanding it. That's definetely a point in favour of the song.

I'm not into musicals, either, let's found a club. :) I discovered the song because I'm watching my way through the old Doctor Who series and Jon Pertwee, who played the third Doctor, like to occasionally sing to himself. Jon Pertwee acted in many musicals and also recorded a few albums (rude sea shanties and songs for children - a great combination if you ask me), so I guess that was solely his idea. In one of his first episodes he sings the line "shine on, shine on, Martian moons, up in the sky" to the melody of this song. I'm a little sad that they didn't record a full version with futuristic lyrics but Ruth Etting's rendition of the song is great, too.

3. Angelika Express - Copyright Killer
I've never heard of this band before, either, but this is excellent. What a great baseline.

Most people haven't heard of them, unfortunately. They're a punk rock band from Cologne. I accidentally stumbled on them on the net. I'm glad you liked the song. Ordinarily, it wouldn't have been my first choice but I was frustrated by the music industry sabotaging YouTube.

1. Peter Murphy - All Night Long
This is apparently an 80's guy...although I have no idea how I missed him, given that I spent MASSIVE amounts of time in front of MTV in the 80's (before it started sucking). But anyway, I missed him and had never heard this song before.

For an 80's song, I really like it. If it came out today, it would be just another alt rock tune...but for the 80's, it's actually pretty progressive. So it gets props for that.

2. Bent - Swollen
Well, Electronica is not my genre...so I had never heard this before. Nor do I know much of anything about this type of music. This was okay - certainly not offensive or anything. But not really all that interesting to me either.

But I will say that I much prefer this mellow kind of electronica to the dance club stuff.

3. Fiona Apple/Elvis Costello - I Want You
Okay. Fiona Apple has a very good voice. Normally, she sings songs that are not really my cup of tea...but there is no denying her talent as a vocalist. That much is evident here.

Was a bit surprised that Elvis Costello didn't sing on this track...but then I have not kept up with him at all in recent years, so there might be some kind of reason for that that I am not up to speed on.

Anyway, a very emotional performance of this song. Very good...if a little overdramatic toward the end especially.

My picks follow. In truth, I'm not even sure if I like one of these songs in particular - I just saw it and included it to get other people's opinions.

Peter Murphy is the ex-singer of Bauhaus, who were one of the founders of Goth rock. If you ever see the movie "The Hunger", Bauhaus appear at the beginning playing their song "Bela Lugosi is Dead" in a club, and the movie opens with a shot of Murphy (who looked more vampiric than David Bowie or Catherine Deneuve, who played the vampire characters). Here it is - the opening scene of The Hunger. Here are two of their most popular songs: She's in Parties and The Passion of Lovers.

His solo stuff was mellower than that of his former band used to be. This is another one of my favorite songs by him - A Strange Kind of Love, and this was probably his biggest hit - Cuts You Up.

This performance comes from a 2006 in a concert called "Decades Rock Live" where she paid tribute to Costello by covering his song "I Want You" while he joined her on guitar. This is Costello's original version: I Want You. Apparently he recorded it while he was going through a difficult divorce, and word is that he was drunk when he was recording it and just kept singing lyrics as they came to him. :rommie:

Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
Love this song. This song reminds me that Vampire Weekend is a really intelligent band (preppy as fuck, but still). Catchy blend of so many different styles. It's just impossible not to enjoy them and this song. Still need to listen to Contra, though. 5/5

Elizabeth & the Catapult - Perfectly Perfect
OK, the music video was so clever I had to watch the whole thing. Now I'm just thinking about the ending and I've forgotten about the song! ;)
Anyway, really cool. Has a poppy show-tune vibe that really works, especially with the lyrics that don't quite match. Poor bear :( 5/5

Prince - Awesome Guitar Solo 2
Is that the name of the song? Anyway, I can dig it. The whole thing is a bluesy jam style and the guitar solo is pretty good. It's hard to give Prince credit, but he really does many, many things well. 4/5

^ Regarding Prince, no, that's not the title of the song. I think the title is in the description: "The Ride". :)

Ok Go "Get Over It"

Heard before. Decent song. Would one just call this Alternative? I hear it on that station...well it is called a "New Rock" station. 8/10.

Spacehog "In The Meantime"

Heard before. Again decent song...pretty much was all over the radio back in the day. 8/10

Collective Soul "Untitled Song"

Haven't heard before. Ok song...I like some Collective Soul. 7/10.

I sent you a PM don't want to spoil it for anyone else. :)

[edit] I added another link to the same song 2...hopefully it will work. Oops! Fixed it.

The Gathering - Leaves
I like the instrumentals, hate the vocals. It's alright overall. 2/5

Apocalyptica - End of Me
Ew Gavin Rossdale :p
Actually, it's pretty good for modern mainstream hard rock (sorta a Breaking Benjamin type style). 3/5

Ingrid Michaelson - Maybe
This song played where I used to work. Makes it impossible to give it a fair review. I think it works in its favor, because it was one of the better songs to play. A generally pleasant, fun to listen to song. 3/5

I know several people here will appreciate at least the third song :p

OK, missed the one I intended to do, so i'll do Alidar's.

White Stripes - Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.

Jack White has a really good grasp on melody, and i love the simplicity of his playing and chord structures. I get the same thing when I listen to many artists, like Neil Young for instance, they write unforgettable tunes with like 3 chords, and you just wonder how the hell they do it. Good track.

4/5

Megadeth - Skin of My Teeth.

Of course I own Countdown to Extinction, and this is oe of the best tracks on it. Dave Mustaine is a legend, and i've always thought Megadeth are one of the most melodic metal acts out there. Saw them perform this one in '93 actually. Great riff, great song.

5/5

Pearl Jam - State of Love & Trust

The best PJ song never to make a proper studio album. What more is there to say? A stone cold classic.

5/5

Really? I can't imagine who! :shifty:

Seriously though, I think that you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a more appreciative audience for that song on TrekBBS than Pingfah and I. I'd have given it 5/5 too. Most excellent song, agreed! :techman:

Although Pingfah...Yellow Ledbetter gives it a run for it's money as best PJ song to not make a 'proper' studio album (unless you count Lost Dogs as a proper studio album...). Both are on Rearviewmirror though...so the universe has been set right in the end.

1. Janelle Monae - Tightrope

This video was fascinating. The dancing was awesome...and that HAIRDO (okay, boyz, girls notice these things! )!!! Wow! What a 'do!

Anyway, about the music - not generally what I listen to, to be sure. But I enjoyed this. And that is the whole point of this thread, isn't it? To expose yourself to things you might not have known about before.

Anyway, I can't say as I'd go out and buy her CD or anything. But this was a fun listen that I enjoyed for a change of pace. 7/10

2. The Gracious Few - Appetite

Okay...at the time they were on the scene, I struggled with Candlebox (I was a Grunge snob and decided early on that they were 'not doing anything new but only cashing in on the Grunge explosion', so wrote them off based on that alone, I suppose - I was brutal. )

But this track is pretty good, I think. I don't know if it's because these days, there is such a shortage of new bands who appeal to me, so I am willing to think twice...or if they genuinely ARE better than Candlebox. But I liked this one, and might listen to more of their stuff. 8/10.

3. Leatherface - Pale Moonlight

I have heard of these guys, but have not heard their music before now. And long story short, I like the song itself quite a bit - I just don't like the lead singer's voice. WAY too hoarse for my taste. Might give them another shot and hope the lead singer's voice improves...but this one gets bumped down quite a bit, ONLY because of him. 6/10

My picks for this round:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnhXHvRoUd0&feature=related

It's been a while since I participated, so now I shall make my triumphant return!

*crickets*

Yes, well. Perhaps I overstated my case a little. Anyway, songs:

Pantera - "Cemetery Gates"

Wasn't too sure about the intro, but it definitely improved once into the song "proper." It reminds me of another artist, but I honestly can't place who. Heard of the band, but don't really know any of their stuff.

6/10

Kings of Leon - "Use Somebody"

It's funny... I've enjoyed Kings of Leon since I first heard "The Bucket" four or five years ago, but I've never really listened to them much. That said, this is one of those songs that's impossible to avoid, so thankfully, it's really good. Solid song, if a little overplayed by now.

9/10

Alice in Chains & Mike McCready - "Rooster"

Heard of the band, of course, but didn't really know the song. It's not bad, but it doesn't really grab me, to be honest. I honestly can't think of that much to say about it, since it didn't make a huge impression on me, good or bad.

5/10

My three, including a couple from Grooveshark since they weren't on YouTube. Hopefully they work for folks...

I actually am not a fan of Candlebox at all either. Although I do like the singer's voice, I found them to be a boring band. 3/5 of this new band are from Live, who also have some extremely sketchy work.

I was always of the opinion though that Live were a band of great rock musicians burdened by a horribly pretentious singer. Some of their music was extremely well composed. I think this album proves that point, it's just unpretentious rock with massive riffs and great tunes.

Might give them another shot and hope the lead singer's voice improves...
It doesn't... You do just get used to it though

Guster - The Captain

A lively, feel-good song with nice guitar work. I like the little disharmonies. I've never heard of the band. Definetely appealing.

Great Big Sea - Excursion Around the Bay

Well, this one is rather unusual. It sounds like a raucous drinking song, but maybe that's only because of the manner of this rendition of it. It's a live recording after all. Not exactly my cup of tea.

Barenaked Ladies - Helicopters

I've heard of this band before, but I've never actually listened to a song by them. I like the psychedelic sound effect in the background but other than that it strikes me as standard radio fare. Not bad, but not very exciting, either. (sorry)
