TrekBBS vs. the Music

^
Flying Lotus "Tea Leaf Dancers"

Never heard it before.
Trippy...not my style of music. Give it a 4.
Won't be tuning in for more.

Orbital "Halcyon and On and On"

Hadn't heard this song before.
It is ok...They used 2001 A Space Odyssey in the video. Give it a 5.
I have heard Orbital before...so probably hear some more.

The Republic Tigers "Buildings and Mountains"

Have heard before.
Its ok...still not my thing. Give it 6.
Won't tune in for more.

Here are my 3...

Oh! What a fun game! I want to play too! :D

1. Yiruma - A River Flows In You
I had never heard this before, but it sounds alot like Narada's music to me. 'Relaxation music' that you can read to or whatever. You can even go to sleep listening to this music. Which is a good switch from the sort of music I normally listen to, which has you turning up the volume and bobbing up and down in your car seat as you rock out!

This was posted to YouTube by a guy who calls himself Animefreak - I'm guessing this guy is Japanese?

2. Vampire Diaries 119 Within Temptation - All I Need
The song is good enough (if a bit overblown..forgivable given that it is likely used in the TV show for some sort of angsty scene or another.)

However, I do NOT like the female singer. Too high and squeaky for my taste. I mean, she has a good voice and is on pitch and all that - just not to my taste. The video gives no name for the singer, but if I knew her name, I'd be sure and avoid her.

3. Slipknot - Snuff

Although I had not heard this song, I was really glad to get it in the mix, because I've been meaning to seek out these guys on YouTube for a REALLY long time. So thanks for that, Jetfire.

I liked this song a lot...but then I tend to enjoy harder rock - more specifically, what used to be referred to as 'grunge'. And while this isn't that...it's at least on that end of the spectrum. This first 'experience' with a band I've been meaning to check out was positive...and I plan to listen to more. :)

My picks:

DISCLAIMER I am FAR from a music critic, having grown up listening mostly to classical music, so I'm a bit self-conscious with these 'reviews.'

Sam Roberts - Brother Down
Liked this one. Missed most of the lyrics, but that's typical when hearing a song for the first time.

The Tragically Hip - Grace, Too
I have heard of this band, but am not familiar with their stuff. Liked it well enough, but it did go on a bit long.

mimic, I wasn't paying attention to the poster who selected your picks...but as SOON as I saw who the first two bands were, I knew. Because Canadave got me totally hooked on both of these bands about 3 years ago, as a result of a thread I started in this very forum.

Second best advice I've ever received on this BBS, in the almost 10 years I've been here - the best piece of advice being 'watch Babylon 5'.

Canadave...so you are trying to reel in another one, 'eh? These guys need to pay you by the new fan or something. I didn't see your picks before I selected mine...but you will be pleased. ;)

What is it, 3 years later, and The Hip are my third favorite band of all time...which is pretty good considering they follow Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam. ;)

The band is Within Temptation. I agree her voice is kinda squeaky but it doesn't bother me.

About Slipknot... :bolian:

1. Mother Love Bone-Holy Roller

Never heard before.
Rock & Roll seems like southern rock...I am not into that now...but years ago. Give it 6/10.

2. The Tragically Hip-Poets (International Version)

Haven't heard this song...but know the group.
Don't like...kinda strange to me. Give it 3/10.
Won't tune in for more.

3. Screaming Trees-Dollar Bill

Know the band...haven't heard this song.
It's ok. Alt rocky. Give it 7/10.
Good group in general. :)

Jetfire's first song didn't play for me due to geolocking.

Kittie - What I Always Wanted

Female death metal or something like that. Not a bad song per se but I really hate this singing style, sorry. I liked the passages where the singer actually sung, though. It was hard for me to get through the whole song, so no more for me, thanks.

Amanda Kaletsky - Never Enough

A singer/songwriter thing which sounds pleasant enough. I must say that I really appreciate the singer's voice. The song itself is ok, though not very memorable. Still, I might check out more of her songs.

Here's my selection:

I hope this works for all of you

1. Otep - T.R.I.C.
The music is not bad, but I really don't like the rapping singing and nu-metal is not my cup of tea. I heard about this band, probably listened to a couple of their songs but I'm not interested enough to listen to more.
2.5/5

2. Kittie-What I Always Wanted
I know this band and like it. Heavy and groovy and and I like the vocals - both harsh and clean.
4/5

3. Amanda Kaletsky - Never Enough
Nothing much to say except I like her singing.
3.5/5

Blue - "The Birthday Massacre"

I'm a little conflicted on this one. At first it sounded like it would be a typical shouty, pounding heavy metal piece, which I'm not a huge fan of, but the girl singing the verses has an excellent voice—there's almost a synth-pop feel to those parts. But then the chorus just sounds like cliched heavy metal, to me. Had there been more of the girl, I think I would have liked this more. Never heard of the artist.

Check out some of their other stuff on YouTube. You're accurately described their style, but there are other songs you might like better, based on what you've said.

Also, hey, they're Canadian. ;)

What can I say? I tend to be a bit evangelical when it comes to my favourite bands and artists.

And Spiff, I'll check out those links later, when I'm at home.

^Canadave, I'm totally that way, too

Shurik's selections-

Alestorm - Keelhauled
The beat at the beginning was so fast it kinda gives the impression that the song is a runaway train that may derail any second. Vocals weren't pleasant, but considering the pirate theme it makes sense. Overall, catchy and fun, if a hair out of my musical comfort zone.

VNV Nation - Legion
Driving beat, slightly distorted vocals, very electronic. Four chords repeated for more or less the entirety of the song. Not bad, but not my taste really either.

Gogol Bordello - Start Wearing Purple
Reminded me of that song the innkeepers sing in Les Mis. Very bizarre, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. My least favorite of the three.

Franz Ferdinand - Can't Stop Feeling
I've been waiting for the day when I'd meet somebody else who liked Franz Ferdinand. Even though I didn't like the video (or the new-agey feel of Tonight, the album this song was taken from), it's pretty good. But, the only reason it doesn't get 5/5 from me is because it isn't This Fffire or Take Me Out. :)
4/5

New Indigo
Awesome song. Excellent beat cleverly offset by calm vocals. Charming theme, excellent lyrics only make an awesome song better. I'm definitely going to check out more.
5/5

Mic Christopher - Heyday
Eh... kind of the bad egg out of this batch of three. Too abstract-hippie-ish even compared to some of the songs I listen to. To be fair, it's technically very competent; just not my style. At least it's better than a lot of the crap some of the idiots at my school play, which is largely the same style... just played much worse :barf:

These guys play punk with Russian folk influences, this particular song is just more Russian than punk :) Their singer, Eugene Hutz, had one of the main roles in Everything Is Illuminated - Alex, the Ukrainian translator ...

I'll have another go, I think. I enjoy this game, even if I don't end up enjoying the songs.

Neon Genesis Evangelion sountrack - "The Beast II"

Ooo, a soundtrack! I'm a bit of a score buff, so this is a nice change. Can't say I'm familiar with the anime, though I have heard it. The song sounds like something an Asian version of Murray Gold would write, and it's pretty cool. Big thumbs up on this one, for me.

9/10

"Death Comes in Disguise" - Silent Force

It's not too shabby. Sounds like... I dunno, 80s hair metal or something? The vocals are pretty good, and the instrumentals are solid as well. It's catchy, as well, and in the right mood I could certainly see myself wanting to listen to more in this vein. Does seem to drag on a bit through the bridge, though... the guitar solo is a little "meh" for my tastes. Never heard the song, or heard of the artist.

7/10

Wildpath - "Ice Rose"

Not quite sure how to classify this one. A symphonic ballad, maybe? It's definitely nice, and the woman singing has a beautiful voice, though I can't make out most of the words. Instrumentation is nice, as well, if nothing incredibly spectacular. And the John Cage tribute at the end is perfect. ;)

7/10

Here's my three, I was aiming for some variety in tone:

New Indigo

5/5
For the record (since it's not exactly clear from the video) the song's by Tom Milsom, who's 21 years old. He did everything himself, except the trumpet - piano, drums, vocals, production, etc.

Gordon Lightfoot - Early Morning Rain
I'll admit it's not close to my favorite kind of music. It's pleasant, but I kept waiting for it to do anything particularly interesting and it never did.
2/5

Metric - Gold Guns Girls
Actually one of my favorite songs that have been released recently. Sounds far more exciting after Gordon Lightfoot ;)
It has a cool riff, a fairly catchy chorus, and it breaks things up every so often with that crunchy distortion during the chorus.
5/5

The Decemberists - The Legionnaire's Lament
I've never really listened to the Decemberists much before. It has a nice Strokes-esque/Brit Pop feel. Cool bouncy pop verses and sing along chorus.
5/5

OK, my go:

I tried to go with variety as well.

1. Good - Better Than Ezra

What's not to love about this song? Excellent! In truth, I have not listened to these guys a tremendous amount (mainly the few songs I've heard on the radio at intervals), but I would listen to them - should listen to them. I remember liking them in the past when I heard them on the radio...but I really should watch them more on YouTube to hear some of the stuff that's not on the radio. But liked this song alot. Definitely will listen to more. 5/5

2. Millionaire - Queens of the Stone Age

Didn't like this one. I actually liked the music - I'm just not a big fan of that death metal screeching of lyrics. Won't listen to more. 2/5

3. Bigmouth Strikes Again - The Smiths

This song sounds really familiar, like I've heard it sung by someone else - not these guys. But I can't place, for the life of me, WHO! And it's annoying the shit out of me.

Anyway, pretty good song. Not really my style of music, but I enjoyed it for something that's not my style of music. Second best of the three - would perhaps listen to more...but if it were to turn out to be 'more of the same', I'd eventually lose interest. 3/5

PKTrekGirl's...

Breaking Benjamin "Sooner Or Later"

Know the band.
I am not a fan of their music...not that it is bad. 7/10.
Always hear them on the radio.

Jonathan Coulton "Code Monkey"

Never heard before.
It's ok. The vid is interesting. Looks like it was from WOW  Kinda punk-alternative. 6/10
Won't seek out more though.

Love Battery "Half Past You"

Never heard before.
Typical grunge...not too bad. 7/10
Might look up more.

1. Mother Love Bone-Holy Roller

Never heard before.
Rock & Roll seems like southern rock...I am not into that now...but years ago. Give it 6/10.

Not sure if you like Pearl Jam or not...but if you do, you might be interested to know that this band is of key importance to Pearl Jam's backstory. You have two members of Pearl Jam in this band (did you spot them? :D )...and if Andrew Wood, the lead singer of MLB hadn't died of a heroin overdose fairly soon after this video was made, Pearl Jam might never have existed. Pearl Jam was formed 'out of the ashes' of this band...and this band is not considered to be southern rock at all. It's actually pretty routinely listed as one of the 'founding father' Seattle grunge bands.

PS - And yes, that is WOW in "Code Monkey" - this artist sort of has an informal 'link' to the WOW community, actually, and a lot of WOW vids are made from his music.

Can you tell I have spent a lot of time working with geeks in the software industry?

I am not a Pearl Jam fan. It wasn't bad...I just don't listen to that type of music now...I did many years ago. I can tell now that it is more grunge than southern rock...but I don't have a problem with either. :)

Also, the grunge super group Temple of the Dog was a tribute to Andrew Wood.

Anyway,
Mudvayne - Dig
Maybe it's too early in the morning to listen to alt metal like this. I actually found it to be quite boring, sadly. It didn't really have a lot of energy, which is pretty much what is needed for a song like this. 1/5

Avril Lavigne - What the Hell
It's very catchy, but I can't escape the feeling that it's extremely vacuous as well. Song that I can enjoy, but don't love. 3/5.

I Spy - Appliances and Cars
I generally like this style of punk, but I've also heard it done better before. 4/5.

EDIT: BTW, most of Queens of the Stone Age doesn't health death metal style vocals. I was debating not posting that song, but I did want each of my songs to be very different, so I thought I might as well try.
