Agreed. Not saying you don't have a chance, but you definitely reached a lot to do what you did. Could have drafted ARod and then traded him the next day for Howard plus another high-drafted player, I'm pretty sure.
Regardless of that, you just passed on a player that ranks highly is ALL the categories for one that ranks slightly lower in most categories, and doesn't do well at all in some, like SB, for example. Even if you decided ARod was no good, and likely to turn into ME at the plate, passing on Hanley Ramierez or David Wright after that was a big mistake. More 5-tool players that will score high in every category. Heck, if you were that into getting a power-hitting 1B guy, I'd have probably taken Prince Fielder instead. Or, knowing that 1B guys are easier to find later on (I've got 3, for example), I'd probably have gone with Miguel Cabrera, as you'll get similar power, and at a more premium position.
Who knows? It could work out for you, but you definitely handicapped yourself by taking the 11th overall player with the 1st overall pick. Would have been a good time to try the ESPN keeper league feature, where you trade out of the first pick and bump yourself way down, but get a higher pick in the next round as well. In that one, for example (assuming all the same guys on the board), I draft 11th out of 12, so would have definitely traded up with you, as well as trading 2nd round picks, so you'd have drafted 11th and 14th, getting two big guys instead. Not how it works in a 1-year league, though, and not with Yahoo anyway...
It really doesn't matter, though, as you're all destined to lose to me anyway. Starting with you, EMH!
