TrekBBS Fantasy Baseball League!

I'm not too thrilled with some of the picks autodraft made after I had to bail out after the 11th round. Then again, I'm not too happy with some of the picks I made, either. Something about that ticking clock seems to cause my brain to go on the fritz. Oh well, with a little tweaking, I think I can make something of my team.

^Interested in talking trade?

I'm happy with my picks generally, but there are a couple of spots where I didn't move fast enough and could use a little help myself.

yep, and if we're talking trades, my door is ALWAYS open. At least half the time, I'm not trying to rip you off, either. I'll leave you to guess which time it is ;)

A very odd draft, gotta say. Howard with the 1st pick is bizzare. Good that you got the player you liked, but not a good use of the 1st pick, IMO. If not ARod, Hanley Ramierez would probably have been a good pick for a 5-tool guy. Not even sure Howard is the best 1B guy on the board...

I got David Wright with the 7th pick, which confused me, as he was probably #3 overall. Even MORE shocking, I was only one pick away from getting Miguel Cabrera on the way back. He should have been 7th overall, give or take, and I almost snagged him with the 18th pick? :wtf:

Hey, it's all about your personal choices and how you feel best suits your team and strategy. *shrug*

I looked at my team a bit closer this morning and I'm very excited about it. I think it's already much better than the team I had last year.

After sleeping on it, I find that I don't regret that decision. Yeah, ok maybe I should have stayed with the rankings, but I personally chose not to. If that affects me in the season than so be it. However, while we're talking about just one player, I'm looking at my overall draft, all 23 rounds. Looking at the big picture, I was quite happy with my selections, even though if anyone wants to trade A-Rod, I'm open. ;)

If A-Rod gets injured, you'll look like a genius. Still, you could have taken A-Rod and traded him: I'm sure whoever would have ended up with Howard would've been more than willing to make a trade. With a multi-player deal, you might have been able to upgrade at another position as well.

Just picked up my team's token Twins player. I had too many marginal starters, so I dropped one and picked up Pat Neshek. He won't get many save opportunities, but he should contribute in the Holds category (an area I needed some help in).

I don't need him to get injured, just need him to have a crappy year like he had two years ago. As for thinking long term, I think that might be the only valid argument I've heard as to why I should have drafted A-Rod. Still, we'll see how this plays and and I still don't regret the decision. :p

If A-Rod gets hurt, he'll have been very fortunate, more than genius. Unless he avoided A-Rod specifically predicting he would be hurt. Even if he did, there are better guys who can contribute in all categories, and there isn't a fantasy expert that exists who would tell you to take a 4-tool guy over a 5-tool guy.

On the other hand, if having players you love is more important than trying to win the league, then good for you.

I'm confident that Peg can make some in-season adjustments to improve her team. There are always decent starters coming out of nowhere.

Trying to win is important, but why can't the two go hand in hand. It's almost as if you guys are saying I threw in the towel before the season even begins over ONE player. I don't believe that one bit.

Oh, and thanks for the bode of confidence.

No, no...I'm not saying the two can't go hand in hand. Just that, according to most of the major fantasy talent evaluators, you picked a guy ranked between 12 and 17 over a guy nearly unanimously #1. Yeah, it's gonna raise A LOT of eyebrows when that happens, that's all.

It just says to me that you valued getting a guy you liked more than some of the better options production-wise (at least from what most are expecting out of guys). I never said you couldn't win the league, but without looking at the rest of your picks, that's just a really tough way to start off. Maybe Howard will go bananas and it will all work out, but it's a hell of a risk. That's all.

Agreed. Not saying you don't have a chance, but you definitely reached a lot to do what you did. Could have drafted ARod and then traded him the next day for Howard plus another high-drafted player, I'm pretty sure.

Regardless of that, you just passed on a player that ranks highly is ALL the categories for one that ranks slightly lower in most categories, and doesn't do well at all in some, like SB, for example. Even if you decided ARod was no good, and likely to turn into ME at the plate, passing on Hanley Ramierez or David Wright after that was a big mistake. More 5-tool players that will score high in every category. Heck, if you were that into getting a power-hitting 1B guy, I'd have probably taken Prince Fielder instead. Or, knowing that 1B guys are easier to find later on (I've got 3, for example), I'd probably have gone with Miguel Cabrera, as you'll get similar power, and at a more premium position.

Who knows? It could work out for you, but you definitely handicapped yourself by taking the 11th overall player with the 1st overall pick. Would have been a good time to try the ESPN keeper league feature, where you trade out of the first pick and bump yourself way down, but get a higher pick in the next round as well. In that one, for example (assuming all the same guys on the board), I draft 11th out of 12, so would have definitely traded up with you, as well as trading 2nd round picks, so you'd have drafted 11th and 14th, getting two big guys instead. Not how it works in a 1-year league, though, and not with Yahoo anyway...

It really doesn't matter, though, as you're all destined to lose to me anyway. Starting with you, EMH!

I finally dropped all the ESPN keepers to the bottom of the draft list and am almost finished with my offline cheat sheet that I created, so I will be ready to go on Sunday. Looks like my first pick there will be pick #17 and #18 with Alpinemaps getting the first four picks of the day, and five of the first six.

Hey Coaster, we don't have many hits on the MLB league yet (only 3 team signed up). How many more did you mention may be interested?

ESPN draft just isn't going to be as exciting. Already having 6 guys on the roster, the "hard" part of the draft is already over, and the team is taking shape. These are the rounds where you start looking at need vs value for draft position, and starts getting more subjective.

On the other hand, due to some questionable choices when dropping players, Alpinemaps ought to be able to whip that team back into shape with little trouble. Adding (off the top of my head) Manny and Jeter right away ought to be a big help. He also dropped Hafner, and should probably end up picking him up again. Add that to what he has, it's almost something resembling a team again.

That's beside the point. You said you would start with me. I guess it is safe to say you're going to lose the first six weeks. ;)

eh, that's what I get for talking shit at work, where I can't log into the fantasy sports. I thought I was playing you the first week. Turns out, I'm going to beat on Tomalak that week, and make him wish he drafted ARod :)
