So I've been going through, watching as many of the Best Picture winners as possible... and I've realized that, while many fine films have won the Oscar, oftne I think they got it wrong.

So here's our chance to correct the mistakes of Oscar past - or to agree with good decisions. I'll list the original five nominees... you vote for who SHOULD have won, amongst the choices. I'll do about one new poll a week.

Comments welcome!

GoodFellas though I don't share the distain for GF III as others but its the weakest of the series.

Goodfellas.

And EW magazine did a re-vote covering 6 primary categories going back 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 years in their latest issue. All I gotta say is-Gwyneth Paltrow got stomped by Cate Blanchett in the re-vote! And Tommy Lee Jones finished a distant third...

I'm going with Goodfellas too. Dances with Wolves is not unworthy though.

With Best Picture, I'm just happy if the right films get nominated, which does not always happen. 1990 had multiple deserving nominees, and there's no objective argument that can say that one film of the five is better than another. It comes down to individual taste. Goodfellas is not my type of movie, and I really like Dances with Wolves, so I'm perfectly content with the results of that award.

Just want to comment - seems to me that 1990 was not the strongest year ever for Best Picture nominees.

I haven't seen Awakenings; I'm thinking about renting it - anyone know if it's any good?

I found it quite interesting-if a shade predictable in parts.

Goodfellas. I'm forced to disagree with Pauline Kael on this one--I think it's one of Scorsese's best films.

Ghost doesn't belong anywhere near a "Best Picture" list in any year, The Godfather Part III is a shallow (and unnecessary--Part Two finished the story!) imitation of its predecessors, and Dances with Wolves is far too problematic in its depiction of American Indians for me to elevate it so highly.

I haven't seen Awakenings. What's it all about? Any good?

Goodfellas. I never understood why Ghost was nominated for Best Picture. It was okay, but not great. I did like Dances With Wolves, too, though.

For comparison purposes, the top-ranked English language feature films of 1990 on IMDB are:

Goodfellas (8.8)
Edward Scissorhands (8.0)
Miller's Crossing (8.0)
Dances with Wolves (7.9)
Misery (7.8)
The Godfather, Part III (7.6)
The Hunt for Red October (7.6)
Awakenings (7.5)
Jacob's Ladder (7.5)
Rosencratz & Guildenstern Are Dead (7.5)
Trust (7.5)

Ghost scores a 6.9.

Of the nominated films my vote goes to Goodfellas, although Miller's Crossing is my top choice for the year.

Hey, OOMVM - thanks for these comparisons. I'm finding them enlightening and helpful.
