In hindsight, it's Goodfellas no question. Dances wasn't a bad flick though. I think there has been an unwarranted backlash against it because Costner's star has faded, as well as the very fact that it beat Goodfellas.

I'm going to be boring and go with Goodfellas as well - it blows the rest of the films on that list out of the water.

Misery, Miller's Crossing and Edward Scissorhands were all better than Goodfella, as were Awakenings, Dances with Wolves, My Left Foot, Ghost. It is curious that Bruce Joel Rubin had Ghost and Jacob's Ladder out in the same year. Those two and My Life (with Michael Keaton) out in a triple whammy set.

Dances with Wolves. The sentimentalization of the Indians isn't that extreme and is still better natured. Goodfellas approached the problematic autobiography of gangster Henry Hill with astonishing gullibility but a meanspiritedness that really is appalling to behold. It's down there at the Monster level of badness.

For comparison purposes, the top-ranked English language feature films of 1990 on IMDB are:

Goodfellas (8.8)
Edward Scissorhands (8.0)
Miller's Crossing (8.0)
Dances with Wolves (7.9)
Misery (7.8)
The Godfather, Part III (7.6)
The Hunt for Red October (7.6)
Awakenings (7.5)
Jacob's Ladder (7.5)
Rosencratz & Guildenstern Are Dead (7.5)
Trust (7.5)

Ghost scores a 6.9.

Of the nominated films my vote goes to Goodfellas, although Miller's Crossing is my top choice for the year.

Tough choices for this year. I like the 'Wolves' pick but movies like 'Goodfellas' and 'Hunt for Red October' were excellent as well.
