Trek XI to be alternate timeline, according to AICN

An article from "Moriaty" on Ain't It Cool News says that the new trek could use an alternate timeline as a way to reboot the series. For those who don't know him, Moriaty is a professional screenwriter, and got this information during a dinner with someone who has "a nice office on Melrose".

One quote from the article:

"Picture an incident that throws a group of Romulans back in time. Picture that group of Romulans figuring out where they are in the timeline, then deciding to take advantage of the accident to kill someone’s father, to erase them from the timeline before they exist, thereby changing all of the TREK universe as a result. Who would you erase? Whose erasure would leave the biggest hole in the TREK universe is the question you should be asking.

Who else, of course, but James T. Kirk?"

Oh. Please. God. No. Time. Travel.

What is SO wrong with this just being a simple story set in the past? WHY OH WHY do we need to justify it with Time Travel or Other Universes???

I doubt this information.

I see no reason to explain the differences between this version of ST and TOS, in the same way the Klingon ridges didn't really need explaining.

 I've had positive feelings about this movie so far, but Moriarty's report at AICN is truly disturbing. A couple problems right off the bat:

Problem one, time travel. Can we please have a Trek story without time travel? Vastly overdone and unoriginal.

Problem two, screwing with canon. Blowing up Vulcan? "redefine their strict rejection of emotion in favor of logic"? We saw that kind of tinkering on Enterprise, and it worked oh so well there.

These are the kinds of things that could make this movie a disaster. Let's hope this is all bullshit, and if not, let's hope Abrams changes his mind.

Oh man....oh well, everything old is new again, I guess... or in this case, everyting that's new is old again in the future's past! ;)

oh... and I would think the Romulans would gun for Spock for isn't he the one wanting Reunionification?

And another thing about alternate timeline stuff.... the writers said that we would see the orginal Enterprise and yet in the same breath they are talking about the academy or younger versions of the original crew.... does this mean we are skipping Kirk's Farragut days?

I really don't think Nemoy would be singing the praises of the script if it was this same ol' lame shit again......AICN has some hits but far more misses than they used to. Just my 2 cents. :D

Yeah, it's Nimoy's praise of the script that's making me hold out hope that Moriarty's friend at Paramount fed him a line of crap. Somehow I can't see Nimoy getting behind the storyline detailed in the article.

This is exactly the reason why Paramount should have just let Trek die. It's better to have no Trek than bad Trek.

You do realize that Ain't It Cool News is like The Weekly Word News nowadays, right ?

* Yes ? *

Why would they bother casting a young Kirk if the movie revolved around killing his father before he was born?

They cast they are gathering are the enterprise bridge crew a year or two before WNMHGB, this bullshit leak would have to take place at least 32 years before that for killing Kirk's dad preventing his birth.

Huh, uh. Not buying it.
I remember when the rumor came out that STIV was going to be about saving the whales. My friends and I laughed and laughed at that.

Uh, oh!
