Trek writers original works

Midnight Front (hcdj) in the house.

But I’ll probably get the Audible download and listen to it before I can work through enough of Mount TBR* to get to it.

“To Be Read”

So has anybody finished The Midnight Front yet? I'm about 150 or 160 pages into it and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's definitely got one of the most interesting and unique magic systems I've come across.
I'm kind of disappointing though, I just saw on Marco Palmieri's Twitter than a subscription box service had it in their February box with all sorts of cool sounding extras.

Yeah, finished it a little while ago. I thought it was a good read and will be getting any others as and when:)

I have a memory like an addled goldfish - yes, I've finished it too, and fully intended to post here when I did. I really enjoyed it - thought it was a very good combination of magic and the reality of world war II. Really looking forward to part 2 in the series.

Can't resist pointing out that R.S. Belcher, who took first place in the STRANGE NEW WORLDS contest several years back, has a new novel coming out this week: THE NIGHT DAHLIA, a hard-boiled occult thriller with a distinctly noir-ish feel. Think L.A. CONFIDENTIAL with magic.

Full disclosure; I edited the book, which maybe gives it another Trek Lit connection? :)

Sure, I'd say that's another connection. I figured anything with involvement from someone who has worked on TrekLit is OK.

I got my copy today from Amazon. The book smells faintly of perfume; probably worn by the Amazon employee that packed it, but my first thought was that smell was intentional -- like the publisher was pulling some gimmick release (ala William Castle) to help the book really stand out on the shelf.

Greg, do you know if there was a hardcover edition for the Night Dahlia? I have all of Belcher's other books in hardcover and was hoping to get this one in hardcover, too.

There does not appear to be a hardcover, alas. But thanks for asking.

FYI: I'm told there was an attempt to do scented paperbacks back in the day: floral aromas for romances, saddle soap for westerns or whatever. But apparently the warehouse workers and truck drivers rose up in revolt: tons of perfumed paperbacks sitting in a hot truck all day got pretty overpowering! :)

(I heard this story from Tom Doherty himself.)

I don't know if I could handle something like that, unless it was fairly subtle. I'm pretty sensitive to smells, I can't walk past candle shops or perfume sections of stores like Macy's without getting a splitting headache.

Bloody hell, I dread to think what they'd have done with the vampire erotica...

Sorry for the multiple post, but things are moving fast... the Kickstarter campaign for Among the Wild Cybers (and Bud Sparhawk's Shattered Dreams) is now open, from now to May 30. There are various bonuses for donors, including an e-book copy of my Analog story "Abductive Reasoning" and a few hardcover and audiobook copies of Only Superhuman.
