Trek & The Election Results

Eh

Kirk is pretty much Trump personified

The whole = Trump some evil boogeyman is nothing but mass hysteria fueled by mass media and their profit margins, with mass social media fueling it.

So, it's just another election if you don't buy into the media hype.

I'll rewatch DS9, like I always do.

If I were to compare Trump to a Star Trek character, I'd say he'd be more like old, crazy Khan from TWOK, than Kirk.

Kirk being a womanizer was what pushed me over, and he's not as crazed as he sometimes appears. Kirk's indifference to hate for enemy empires is pretty close to Trump. He's alpha, so he's always from a position of power in his dealings.

Hillary is pretty much Janeway in many ways. Soft hand of a female, but can be utterly ruthless when needed.

The response to the Election results on this thread are depressing. We're STAR TREK fans. We're suppose to take the long view of things bodly. Remember what Q said to Picard after the first encounter with the Borg?

Q: If you can't take a bloody nose, why don't you crawl under the bed?

And remember what Picard said to Guinan afterwards?

Picard (paraphrasing): Perhaps what we needed the most is to be shaken from our complacency, in order to shake us out of our complacency.

In other words, nothing lasts forever, and dealing with change can make us stronger. Be bold, my friends, and move forward towards the future.

People voted for Trump because they do not want change, they want to 'make America great again', as in they want to go back to the past. Now what aspect of the past was America great and who was it great for?

But you could have handled that with a little more tact Mixer. Had you sent me a PM, I would have happily edited my previous post. You don't need to publically talk down to me like a child, and say you are going to hand out demerits and such. And if it is really that big a deal, maybe this thread should be moved to MISC. Just a thought.
My post was for everyone's benefit.

Questioning mod decisions, that's what should be handled via PM.

The thread stays. People who post in it need to post things appropriate to GTD.

Seriously, I don't have any immediate, Trek-specific plans, but I could definitely see myself hitting the escapism a little harder in the days to come.
I spent the day and most of the evening working on my NaNoWriMo entry. I'm catching up to peoples' reactions now.

Star Trek is mere fiction and does have zero inspirational value. Trying to turn it into some kind of religion is one of the reasons the rest of the world looks on it, and us, with such contempt.
Being inspired by some aspect of Star Trek is in no way "turning it into some kind of religion."

Many people chose careers in science or education or medicine because they were inspired by something in Star Trek, whether it was to fulfill a personal dream (ie. the fans who went to work for NASA building rockets, or who became astronauts) or to work in general toward nudging this world into the kind of future Star Trek offered.

That doesn't mean they thought of the show in religious terms, any more than someone who is inspired by other shows, books, or plays is thinking of those things in religious terms.

Dukat is more like Trump with the narcissism. Watching the Dukat episodes recently made it very apparent to me

He's also a big womanizer and was always going on about how great he was and how the Bajoran people should thank and appreciate him and he ends up obsessed with destroying them and teaching them a lesson when they don't respond as he wants.

All I can say is everyone needs to be a little more like Picard if they want to actually find common ground to convince people and stop being like two stubborn warring sides that Picard often slaps some sense into.

No, people voted for him because that don't like where the country is and where it's going, so change in both areas.

they want to 'make America great again'
Yes.

as in they want to go back to the past.
No, into a better future than the one in front of us and that we've had for the last several years. The prosperity of the past can exist in the future and certainly wouldn't be a backwards step.

Trump is like Kirk, he can be loud and pushy when it's called for. And he can be soft spoken and respectful when this is the best course of action (like yesterday with President Obama).

Well I hope that ' better future' is not confined to just the WASP male society
Honestly don't see why it would be, I'm a Cuban female and my future now looks better than it did last week.

I don't know if Trump can deliver on every promise, but it got to be a better future than it would have been with "more of the same Hillary."

Which of Mr Trump's promises do you expect to benefit?

Shifting back to actual Trek episodes that take a point of view on politics (or political culture) in a different way... what are the top 10? I'd say The "Drumhead" has to be on there...
The Drumhead for sure. I'm also thinking A Taste of Armageddon.

Redemption I and II about Klingon politics. Picard waited for proof that the Romulans were involved before he got embroiled in the Klingon civil war. Realpolitics for the past 70 years USSR/Russia & USA have been using other civil wars for their own petty ends.

Well most Trek is, although enjoyable, ironically pretty retro so I generally don't watch something in response to political developments.
But the film First Contact does relate to big trends and developments and so should be particularly entertaining to watch not long after an election whether you're happy or not with the results.

If you're looking for good politics-oriented episodes that aren't necessarily relevant to this election, TNG's "The Defector."
