Trek & The Election Results

Insert joke about "laughing at the superior intellect".

Clinton : I'm laughing at the small hands

Trump: Full Impulse Power!

Pence: No sir! You have access to your Twitter again! You can have whatever -

Trump: Full power, damn you!!!

The response to the Election results on this thread are depressing. We're STAR TREK fans. We're suppose to take the long view of things bodly. Remember what Q said to Picard after the first encounter with the Borg?

Q: If you can't take a bloody nose, why don't you crawl under the bed?

And remember what Picard said to Guinan afterwards?

Picard (paraphrasing): Perhaps what we needed the most is to be shaken from our complacency, in order to shake us out of our complacency.

In other words, nothing lasts forever, and dealing with change can make us stronger. Be bold, my friends, and move forward towards the future.

Sorry I've lived through 4 GOP Presidents so far (and now there will be a 5th):

- Nixon: Who was such a crook HIS OWN PARTY helped to Impeach him.

- Reagan: The first time the Taxpayer bailed out Wall Street due to the abject failure/fantasy of "Trickle-down Economics".

- GB Senior: Who wasn't actually that bad overall and at least had a functioning brain.

- GWB: He did Cocaine as a young adult and it showed as he was probably the worst President of the last 100 years. Who bankrupted this country and caused a second Taxpayer bailout of Wall Street because of his Loan system and other Bank deregulation; and his willingness to CONSTANTLY rebuild Iraqi infrastructure (because hey it made his friends rich) while letting U.S. infrastructure languish to the point where our overall road system (repair wise) is at third world country levels.

And now we get Donald Trump - who made the majority of his money off the use of our Bankruptcy laws to get out of paying wages, etc. So yes, I DO fear for whatever plan he has as it will most likely bankrupt the U.S. and once that happens (he has FULL Senate and House control so he can do nearly anything and get it passed); he and the GOP will STILL try to blame the mess on Obama, and possibly Bill Clinton. An ego-maniacal, misogynistic, bigoted narcissist who make make GWB to appear as a Rhodes Scholar by comparison.

Star Trek is a nice fantasy; but if current societal shifts are any indication, that type of world is not one we'll be making progress toward anytime soon or in the next 50 years.

I suggest that we keep this relatively lighthearted and Trek-focused. There are plentiful threads in Misc. and TNZ for getting into the nitty-gritty of political reality.

What a coincidence. I, too, lived 4 Republican presidencies (soon-to-be 5), and you know what? AMERICA SURVIVED. And if you consider 'Trek to be mere fiction, one that has ZERO inspirational value, then maybe the problem is just you, and perhaps you should go away? STAR TREK inspired me tothe a better human being regardless of my circumstance. Trump election win is nothing more than a blip in history, just like every other US President. We CAN do better, but it should be done so bodly.

Star Trek is mere fiction and does have zero inspirational value. Trying to turn it into some kind of religion is one of the reasons the rest of the world looks on it, and us, with such contempt.

After hearing the election results yesterday, I started up Netflix and watched TOS' "Patterns of Force." I'm not sure exactly why I did, but I had the strong desire to do so.

Many fans interpret evidence presented on the show to indicate that American had little or no direct involvement in the third world war.

Trump's proposed policy of re-examining of treaties and considering less involvement in foreign military adventures could be seen as the beginnings of what will keeps America out of WW3.

Trump has said that he wants NASA to get out of the Earth-observation business and let other government agencies (like NOAA) take the lead in this area, while NASA shifts focus from this area to deep space exploration.

Between this and Brexit, we have never been further from the values and ideals of Star Trek.

Well, technically in Star Trek canon the 21st century was when everything fell apart before reforming into the United Earth government. But yeah, anyway, I'm ashamed of my country.
As bad as Trump's electiong was, I was ashamed of my country before that, when I saw this:

Absolutely appalling what is going on at Standing Rock, and considering Trump is for big oil, it will only get worse.

Sorry to get all political, but I considering what the US has historically done to Native Americans, and this is but the latest example, is something we should all be ashamed of.

Colonel Green from The Savage Curtain comes to mind for some reason....
GREEN: What did you find out? What are they doing?
KAHLESS: They've done nothing. They've not armed themselves nor prepared for any kind of defence. I say attack now and finish them.
GREEN: With what? These? (pointed sticks)
KAHLESS: Better than what they have.
GREEN: No, it's not advantage enough. I want to make sure the odds are in our favour. Overwhelm and devastate, that's the way to get power and to hold it, and I mean to do that.

Trump really only has 2 years if he screws up. Midterms could change the balance of the House and Senate in a way that really makes things difficult and then America can drop him after 4 years if we're still dissatisfied/angry.

Today, I feel as if I've been assimilated and that resistance was indeed futile.

And how, in the end did they defeat the Borg? Wasn't it something along the lines of Crusher telling Data "think about this from the mosquito's point of view...?

As mentioned above, there are forums for discussing this sort of thing. General Trek isn't that forum.

Don't make me start handing out formal warnings, or close the thread.
Fair enough, and like I said, I don't get political often, and I posted the previous thread without having read your previous one. I don't read every single post in every single thread. Sorry.

But you could have handled that with a little more tact Mixer. Had you sent me a PM, I would have happily edited my previous post. You don't need to publically talk down to me like a child, and say you are going to hand out demerits and such. And if it is really that big a deal, maybe this thread should be moved to MISC. Just a thought.
