Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

I'm torn on the fact that it's not related to the new films, they've gone to all this trouble to make all the new concepts that it seems a shame to not utilize them, but it will also be good to get back to the Prime universe. I'm hoping for another 100 year jump past the TNG era for new stories.

I haven't seen anything stating they are going back to the Prime universe?

I don't spend a lot of time on these boards. But I do know a lot of fans who have not enjoyed the reboot, mostly Into Darkness, so I think this idea that the reboot have brought fandom together and it's just a few old school moaners left opposing it is a fallacy.

And I know a number of die hard fans that HATED Trek 09 and after seeing Into Darkness said "Now that's more like it!".

I guess they never saw TWOK.

I wonder if this means the future films are in doubt? Last I heard, Trek 4 (14) was in the pipeline with the same cast, Kirk n Spock.

Given the star power in the cast and the fact that they have failed in the long term to generate interest in the larger franchise, I'd say it's inevitable their days are numbered, even if they do a fourth or even fifth picture.

Well, given that the TOS cast only got six movies, and the TNG cast only got four, that's sound about par for the course.

But I'm sure some people would try to spin that as a failure.

Open their minds to what? Poor plotting, vapid characters, fan winks, rehashes of villains revenge plots, nonsense science and Earth set plots?

As for the rest of us, we have a new Trek series coming! Lets get excited people!

I wondered when the first tiresome straw man would appear. Is it not possible to express a reservation about something without this immediate knee-jerk "you're just a hater" act?

I will give the series a chance. What I am saying is that the Trek Kurtzman has been involved in has been largely a vapid shadow of what the franchise used to offer, and because of that I am worried that the new show won't return to it's roots in a intelligent way. I'll still watch it in the hope that it does, and if it succeeds where the likes of Into Darkness failed, then I will be happy, Kurtzman or otherwise. However, the harsh reality is that he's never been involved in any truly top quality stuff. He's one of these guys that almost gets there, but not quite.

I think a lot will depend on the team of writers they get for the show. That will be a big decider for me. If they push the boat out and get some real top quality talent in then that's what will convince me more than anything else. If they take a lazier approach and get the TV equivalent of Orci, I can't say I will go in with a lot of faith.

Yeah, Kirk or bust. Even it means a full on recast I just can't be bothered investing in a new crew anymore. Wrap up the movies with Beyond and then continue the adventures on TV.

I'll predict bust because I would say there's no way in hell they're doing another TOS crew recast.

Well, they would be an interesting conversation topic since Into Darkness drifts further away from Trek than Trek 09 did.

Old time fan here. First off, I enjoyed ST09, but didn't care for STID precisely because I though it was too derivative. If I want to watch "Wrath of Khan", I already have the DVD, thank you.

Also as a student of politics I can tell you that the way to expand your base is not by alienating your preexisting supporters, but rather by keeping them and adding new people by targeting portions of your "product" to their interests.

Admittedly, a taller job, but I certainly think it can be done.

The guy who produced ST09 and STID is also producing this.

It's going to be Abramsverse. I guarantee it.

Besides, what difference does it make? Even if it's in the Prime - it's still being helmed by the nuTrek people. So instead of no Vulcan there's no Romulus? Big whoop.

That being said, I wonder if we'll get an introduction of sorts in the movie.

Abramsverse or Prime, I'm very excited about this news. After more than 10 years and one inaccurate rumor after the next over the past decade we're finally getting another Trek series. Awesome.

I'm not a fan of the idea of paying for CBS streaming service to watch it, but if this is how they want to broadcast the series and there are no other viable options I guess we don't have a choice. A cable channel would have been preferable but oh well, at least new Trek is coming to the small screen!

A new Trek series was inevitable, it was just a question of when CBS and Paramount would get their acts together and realize it's a good idea. They're a media corporation and if they feel there's money to be made from a new series they'll produce it.
