Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

You do realize that the portion of the fandom that hates the Abramsverse that much is a pretty small portion, right?
I think it's larger than you assume.

Anywho, the goal is to expand the fandom, not to continue to cater to a shrinking fanbase.
Load of rubbish. I'm tired of this argument that we can only have mindless drivel like Into Darkness or Trek that supposedly nobody can watch. It is perfectly possible to make a Star Trek that combines the action the newer fans like and the intelligence us older guard appreciate. The two are not mutually exclusive and I am tired of this false premise that they are.

I wonder if this means the future films are in doubt? Last I heard, Trek 4 (14) was in the pipeline with the same cast, Kirk n Spock.
Given the star power in the cast and the fact that they have failed in the long term to generate interest in the larger franchise, I'd say it's inevitable their days are numbered, even if they do a fourth or even fifth picture.

Well, they got a new series out of the movies. What would it take for you to consider it a success?

You're the one saying "nobody can watch". The movies have been hugely successful. Lots of people have watched them.

If you don't like it, super. Don't watch it.

Is this real? Isn't it way to early to return to the small screen? We still suffer Sci-Fi fatigue. Or that an early April joke?

Which isn't true as there's been a spike in sales when each film comes around. The Abrams films have generated interest in the greater Trek franchise.
Then tell me why the nuTrek merchandise hardly sells and TNG barely made a penny on it's blu-ray release?

The Abrams films aren't mindless drivel for people who are willing to open their minds.

Why would CBS do this?

Who the heck uses CBS All Access? Put it on regular TV.

I'm not subscribing to that, so most of their viewers are just going to pirate the show.

Why? It's been a decade.

I think the best movie, if I were behind it, would be a shorter tentpole series akin to some of the HBO offerings. Quality over quantity.

Because the wider audience that they are making the films for, aren't the types to go buy models and toys of the ships, and purchase an older series on blu ray. The films are supposed to make money for itself and it's production companies. It's not JJTreks job to raise the sales for TNG blu-rays, nor do I think was Paramount expecting that.

Open their minds to what? Poor plotting, vapid characters, fan winks, rehashes of villains revenge plots, nonsense science and Earth set plots?

Yeah, I'm quite happy my mind stayed closed on that one.

Then tell me why the nuTrek merchandise hardly sells...

Merchandise has struggled for many franchises that aren't Marvel or Star Wars related.

and TNG barely made a penny on it's blu-ray release?

So if the fans of the new movies didn't rush out to buy insanely overpriced sets of a 25 year-old TV series, they are somehow failures? Never mind the fact that CBS choose to release Enterprise at the same time, forcing many fans to make a choice on what to buy.

It isn't the fault of the Abrams films that even fans of TNG have seemingly lost all interest in the series.

Christ, lets not have this argument in another thread. Fine, you don't like it, you won't be watching. Next.

As for the rest of us, we have a new Trek series coming! Lets get excited people!

Have fun being better than us with your DVDs then. I'm going to enjoy the new stuff.

Re: Why would CBS do this?

I'm sure someone ran the numbers. There are probably more bean counters at CBS than creatives.
We are supposed to be arguing over whether or not the warp nacelles are going to be blue!

I'm guessing a different crew still set in the Abramsverse.

Bingo. Pegg is already saying he'll cameo. Granted, I don't know if that means he's actually been asked to cameo. I expect a very different tone for tv, but still aiming for the widest possible audience.

THR article says Star Trek 4 has been set for 2019. Looks like CBS and Paramount have come together and agreed to get the franchise up and running full swing.

And it looks like it will be on CBS's streaming service, which runs $6 a month.

I wonder if this...

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

...means it'll be syndicated on 'regular' TV too.
I have no doubt it'll find it's way to regular TV after the online broadcast. The question is how long the interval will be.

If $6 a month is that big a hurdle, then you have other problems in life that need to be solved.

"I hate this new Trek show - and it's only available via CBS streaming" is a 21st century Annie Hall joke.
