That would be cool on a Mirror Universe show. What if we see an actual character's journey through the ranks?

No so much useless, but rather a Captain who knows how to deligate authority. As opposed to a micromanager, who doesn't completely trust their subordinates....if Ensign Foley is saving the ship and making the tough calls week after week, audiences may start rolling their eyes and wondering just how useless the captain is anyway
This Ensign Foley is well below direct delegation to the point of bypassing two or three levels of authority. No so much useless, but rather a Captain who knows how to deligate authority. Delegating all your authority to Ensign Foley all the time, week after week isn't a good commander.
All of their authority to a single individual? I don't think anyone would advocate that, but wisely delegating responsibilities and assigning goals to junior officers and senior petty officers would be definition of a "good commander."Delegating all your authority to Ensign Foley all the time, week after week isn't a good commander.
I sorta care about when it will be set, but not enough to stalk the fabric suppliers of the Los Angeles metropolitan era.
Oh, wait, he was already in Charlie X. Mea culpa. It should have been Ensign Pulver.
But, if they have names, how will we know which ones are fodder and which ones to care about? I mean, I don't want to start caring about the random red shirt when he's going to die-that's ridiculousI think an athletic influence on the uniforms would represent a creative touch. Have everyone wear amazingly replicated renditions of the Houston Astros rainbow jerseys of the 70's and 80's. There would no longer be any rank division based on something silly like various factions wearing different colors and a true and genuine vibe of a unified team working towards a common goal would soon prevail. Added to that would be the benefit of blinding at least some adversaries encountered along the mission.
Last, but not least, with everyone's name emblazoned on the back of the jersey, we would know the identities of Ensign Foley and other denizens of the bowels of the ship even if they don't get any proper screen time, as well as those of the poor souls from security who will shortly no longer be among the living.
