Trek n' Weed

“After two puffs on a marijuana cigarette, I was turned into a bat” - Pharmacologist Dr. James C. Munch, US Official Expert on Marihuana

Real science has controls. Do you know if those are twin studies? Do they control for other drug use (yes I'm looking at you, nicotine).

 I want some of that batweed.

You don't actually believe those folks would produce unbiased tests do you?

All from countries where it's illegal and ridiculously over the top penalized, produce "studies" that show it badly effects people, like the "Institute for Drug ABUSE."

Yeah, they're so going to produce fair, unbiased, real science.

Yeah, they're so going to produce fair, unbiased, real science.

Is *either* side going to be objective? I think not.

Wow, tough crowd. Maybe you should open your eyes rather than roll them.

Remember Alcohol, which is cleary less harmful that MJ, is used regularly off duty in Trek (most characters hate synthehol), and if a SF member operated a warp drive while drunk, there would be consequences. Trek has a history with alcohol, Scotty, Klingon Blood Wine, etc. Picard drinking illegal Romulan Ale.

It would be very possible that marijuana would be legal in more enlightened times, but a TV show can't really go there due to ratings, censors, etc. Classic Trek pushed the envelope as it was already back then.

Illegal drugs are not for enlightened people. They are for people that make bad life choices.

Being judgemental is a bad life choice. That stuff will give you a "heart" attack! Carl Sagan was a world class scientist, intelligent and respected, you are not. :brickwall:

Again, I didn't bring him up. Another poster did. I was asked a question and I responded to it.

As far as a heart attack, I play competitive sports five days a week. If I do have a gainer, I hope I drop dead right on the court.

And as far as your last attack on me, I'd say I am very intelligent and very
respected for not using drugs. I'd say that gives me the edge on the dearly departed Mr. Sagan.

Cannabis does not lead to early death any more than it turns you into a bat.

It can however lead to a monument on Mars:

Those studies looked at the effect of smoking five joints a day for a decade.

Of course that's gonna screw up your brain--and comparable use of alcohol or nicotine will no doubt screw it up even more. Most pot smokers indulge maybe 1/100 as much.

Yes, he did. More than one, but if he did drugs let's focus on that.
I'd rather focus on his accomplishments.

I'm not the one who brought up his drug use. Maybe you should have responded to that poster instead.

FordSVT- No, if it were legal it would still be bad. Drugs don't make you smarter or better. They are a road to early death.

That's such an over-generalization it's meaningless. No one is claiming drugs make you "smarter" or "better". Having a drink or smoking a joint is not going to lead you down the "road to early death" unless you chose it to. People have been using drugs for eons, hell some animals use drugs in a recreational manner. It's not immoral.

There is a difference between drug use and drug abuse. As with most things, moderation is key. I assume you don't use Aspirin or Tylenol or drink alcohol of any kind either? Or use any harder drugs if prescribed by a doctor? Or is it just the drugs you don't use that are "bad"?

I'd never look down my nose at a person who choses not to partake in drugs or alcohol, but you can leave the self-righteous "dry county" attitude at home.

"Drugs 'er bad, m'k?"

Exactly. The truth is probably somewhere in between both extremes. Like I said, I don't have anything against weed. But too much of anything can be detrimental to your health. It's good to drink a glass of wine now and then, but a bottle a day is gradually going to take some kind of physical toll on you. But that's all up to the individual.

I would think that it was Sagan's accomplishments, intelligence and skill that got him to that point. Not his drug use. You're not seriously telling us that you think pot made him smarter or better, are you?

No one is claiming drugs make you "smarter" or "better".

Really? See above. ;)

^ He believed cannabis enhanced his creativity and insight. I believe those traits contribute to a person's "accomplishments, intelligence and skill." YMMV

Everyone give this guy a round of applause for not doing drugs. I think fox news is more up your alley than Star Trek.

Anyone thinking I want to "convert" anybody to anything is delirious. I'd be happy enough if those with emotional problems would just ignore this thread as not their cup of tea.

And "people like you" - that's not a very IDIC thing to say, now is it? ;)

I don't believe you. Aren't you the one who just said that you think drugs made Carl Sagan smarter? The implication is that you think we would all be better off if we ALL just started puffing away.

And "people like you" - that's not a very IDIC thing to say, now is it? ;)

I can give as good as I get.

I'm sure he did. But that doesn't make it true.
That it is true really bothers you, does it?

See, that's the thing. I don't believe it's true.

I'm sure people like you do, but get this through your head: What you are doing is not going to work. You are not going to 'convert' people like me. Capisco?

people like you? You mean squares?:guffaw: If you don't like the stuff, fine! I'm sure there is an "I'm as pure as the driven snow" thread around here somewhere! All this high moral ground business is ridiculous. How all these uptight people could like Star Trek escapes me.

Thank you for proving my point.

I'm not 'pure as the driven snow', and have never claimed to be. I just don't want anything to do with these drugs you seem so fond of. Why is that so hard to accept?

All this high moral ground business is ridiculous. How all these uptight people could like Star Trek escapes me.

So I'm 'uptight' just because I don't 'feed my head', is that it?
