Trek guest actors in maybe surprising roles

Ha! Speaking of Anthony Caruso as a Mexican bandito, I turned on the Heroes & Icons channel this morning, and there he was, in an episode of The High Chaparral.

I'm watching a documentary on 'Creature Features' called 'Up Late with Bob Wilkins' and William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Bruce Hyde have all made appearances via archival interview footage.

I grew up watching that show. Bob was also a local weatherman and kids show host in the SF Bay Area. His shows helped develop my love of Science Fiction.

In the Have Gun - Will Travel ep "Dream Girl," Hal Needham actually had a leading role as a goofy young hick who made his fortune mining gold in the hills, then came back into town after 5 years to find the saloon girl who promised to marry him. Hal is often in the crown scenes on the show, also often falling off of something. This was a rare lead for him.

I think he appeared three times in the series as the same character, El Lobo, in the first two seasons! :techman:

Two Black actors who appeared in Trek appeared in the same episode of Mannix (not in the same scene.!) Wiliam Marshall/"Dr. Richard Daystrom" and Davis Roberts/"Dr. Ozaba"

So, there were three TV pilots made for a potential series entitled "Call to Danger". One made in 1961, one in 1966, and the last in 1973. The last two both star Peter Graves and are available to watch on YouTube.

It was the 1966 version that caught producer s Bruce Geller and Joseph Gantman's attention and led to Peter Graves being cast as Jim Phelps in the second season of 'Mission: Impossible'.

Anyway, the second pilot has James Gregory, William Smithers and Laurel Goodwin in supporting roles, while the 1973 version has Diana Muldaur and Michael Ansara.

The first regular episode of the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (as opposed to the summer replacement series) (my wife got tired of watching serious shows :) ) features a grand operatic sendup of All in the Family as its finale number. Cher is Edith Bunker, Met Baritone Robert Merrill is Archie, Sonny plays Meathead, and in a total surprise, Gloria is played by the glorious Teri Garr!

Of no Trek note whatsoever, but interesting nonetheless, Steve Martin is in the chorus!

Jason Evers comes between Michael Forest and Claude Akins in Gunsmoke, "Innocence," 1964.

Mark Lenard as Chief of Security Urko, a regular character, Ron Stein as Turvo and Biff Elliot as Ullman in Escape From Tomorrow, the first episode of Planet of The Apes!

Teri Garr, Kirk Raymond, Monty O'Grady, Gene Dynarski (not that I saw him) in Close Encounters of The Third Kind (1977)

I honestly don't recall the scene, and it probably didn't take much time, but IMDb has this.
That may be why I don't remember it: it's a deleted scene.

Both Gene Dynarski (who played Roy's DWP foreman Ike) and Carl Weathers (who appeared briefly as an MP who questions Roy at the train depot) are listed in the end credits of every version of the film, but they're only seen in the original 1977 theatrical cut.
