Trek fashion disasters

I remember when I was little and saw the episode arena for the first time.
The gorns outfit was so ridiculous I couldn't keep myself from laughing.
When I first saw that episode, I was able to accept the rubber lizard suit. The silly part was that tunic the Gorn was wearing. It looked like something Bob Mackie designed for Cher.

You know, that's science fiction in a nutshell, isn't it? Reminds me of that bit about Superman (that I'm probably going to get wrong): basically, that you can set up a character with superpowers and the audience will believe it, but if you have them solve a mystery only because they happened to overhear the criminals discussing the case in a diner, then the audience calls "bull***t".

Another Trek example? The white waiter uniforms from Nemesis. What the everlovin heck?

The problem with TNG was the 80's. There were some clothing ideas during the decade overall that were really out there that just look silly now, future-clothing or not. In the 80's, people had a weird fashion sense for what they thought looked good.
We like to remember the most outrageous, attention-getting, or extreme styles of any particular period, but there’s always good and bad fashion. Remember Sturgeon’s Law.

Very true. I'm not saying the 80's didn't produce good fashion, but the 80's seemed so especially bad at it. You often have fashion trends that eventually come back, like bell bottoms or platform shoes and countless other things from different eras, but I don't think I've seen anything come back yet. A lot of the fashion from the 80's was gaudy and tacky and I'd venture we'd never dare to wear stuff like it today, even the good stuff. The 80's tried hard to make a fashion statement, and it's ironically fashion statements like these that made TNG's fashion of the future look so dated. Anytime one makes a bold fashion statement, they run the risk of dating themselves.

Here's my entry. Absolutely dreadful. And apparently it was her only clothing because she never wore anything else.

Usually takes about 30 years for things to "Come Back Into Style", we're just barely getting to that point with the 80s now. Though as to what has come back, Pink shirts on men seems to have returned to being fashionable, and neon never did totally go away. No sign of the big hair or shoulder pads and sweater dresses yet though :D

Unfortunately, if you look at the girls' and juniors' section, the 80s IS coming back, and it is butt ugly. Basically, neon is back and all concepts of tailoring and proper fit of clothes have gone out the window. Fortunately the ladies' section isn't so far gone yet.

Considering we're in the age of 70's hair cuts being back, as well as crox, mullets, socks and sandals (it's not hip, you're just dressing like your grandparents), pencil thin goatees made popular by boy bands, and fat chicks in midriff revealing shirts, we're in a glass house.

 In Liaisons, Worf says that his dress uniform looks like a dress, so I guess that's the closest we're going to get!
Very true. If Sir Patrick had sported the look, it could have made the 'Picard Manoeuvre' very different (I'm thinking Basic Instinct )!
